Unit 1 Sparky Smart Kids’ Bike Helmet: First Look

If you’ve been searching for a kids’ bike helmet that your child actually wants to wear, this might be it.

The Unit 1 Sparky helmet is a brand-new offering from the tech-forward helmet company best known for my current favorite Unit 1 Aura smart bike helmet. The Sparky is their first kids’ model, packed with features aimed at safety, comfort, and fun.

Why I Backed the Unit 1 Sparky Helmet

I initially backed the Sparky on Kickstarter, where you often find early bird pricing (typically 20% off MSRP). For $99.99 retail, I expected a premium helmet, and out of the box, it delivers on several fronts:

What Makes This Helmet Stand Out

1. Smart Features for Kids:

  • Magnetic Fidlock buckle — easy and pinch-free
  • Rear LED light — controlled by the child for visibility and fun
  • Built-in NFC tag — stores emergency contact and other info you want to be added
  • Additional silicon “personality” inserts — for customization (easily removable)

2. Adjustable Sizing:

  • Fits heads from 49 to 53cm (generally ages 3–10)
  • Adjustable dial at the back
  • Removable fit cage arms with 3 size positions
  • Comes with extra padding for smaller heads

3. Weight & Comparison:

  • 392g without inserts, 452g with inserts
  • Compared to Kali Chakra Kids (269g, no light, no NFC, no Fidlock)
  • Closest competitor is the Woom Ready helmet, which is lighter at 300g but doesn’t include all the features

Who It’s For

This helmet is great for kids learning to ride, scoot, or skate — and want something fun and safe. If you’re looking for NTA-8776 certified protection (for higher-speed e-bike riding), check out helmets like the Ozmo Sidekick instead.

But for kids riding independently, the Sparky hits the right balance of tech, style, and safety.

First Impressions & What’s Next

My 7-year-old is already eyeing the lightning bolt inserts, and the ease of using the rear light is a huge win. We’ll be testing the helmet with our kids ranging from age 2 to 10 and reporting back in a few weeks.

Want me to test something specific? Let me know! For now, check out Unit 1!
