The latest generation of the Tern HSD is here.
I've been a fan of the HSD since it launched in 2019. It's one of my favorite short-tail electric cargo bikes because it strikes an excellent balance between everyday ride quality, cargo capacity, and premium design.
I've also been on this bike from multiple angles—as a former cargo bike shop owner, someone who worked in product at Tern, and now as someone who helps families move more with bikes and technology.
So what changed with the newest Gen 3, and should you be excited? Here's everything you need to know.

What Is the Tern HSD?
HSD stands for Haul Stuff Daily, and it's Tern's flagship short-tail cargo bike alongside the longer GSD.
Unlike a full-size long-tail cargo bike, the HSD is designed to carry:
- One child or passenger
- Groceries and everyday cargo
- Large panniers and accessories
- Daily commuting gear
I've always described it as the crossover SUV of cargo bikes. It's large enough to replace many car trips while still riding like a premium city bike.
For many families, it's one of the best options available for replacing everyday errands with a bike.

The Basics
If you're new to the HSD, here are the highlights.
The HSD uses Bosch's mid-drive e-bike system, placing the motor between the cranks for efficient power delivery and natural handling.
Every model includes:
- Removable Bosch battery
- UL 2849-certified e-bike system
- One-size-fits-most geometry
- Adjustable handlebars
- Two-stage adjustable seatpost
- Low step-through frame
- Compact storage
- Vertical parking
- Excellent accessories
- 10-year warranty with Tern Care registration
What's New on the HSD Gen 3?
The biggest changes come from an entirely redesigned frame.
New Frame
The Gen 3 features:
- Longer wheelbase
- Lower center of gravity
- Approximately 6–7% stiffer front end
- Increased carrying capacity
The total gross vehicle weight is now 419 pounds, which includes:
- Bike
- Rider
- Passenger
- Cargo
- Accessories
Maximum rider weight increases to 287 pounds, while the rear rack can now carry 176 pounds.
The bike also fits riders up to approximately 6'9", depending on inseam.
The tradeoff? A stronger frame also means a heavier bike.
Bosch Gen 5 Motor
The HSD Gen 3 uses Bosch's latest Generation 5 Performance Line motor.
Bosch claims:
- 400 grams lighter
- 30% less internal friction
- Quieter operation
For Class 1 models, the riding experience won't change dramatically beyond improved efficiency.
Class 3 models, however, receive a substantial increase in power with up to 90 Nm of torque and 700 watts of assistance.
One useful Bosch feature many riders overlook is the ability to reduce the maximum assist speed in the Bosch Flow app. That means you can enjoy the more powerful Class 3 motor while limiting the bike to a lower assisted speed if you prefer.
Tern HSD Gen 3 Models
North America receives four HSD models.
All include:
- 545 Wh Bosch PowerPack battery
- Magura hydraulic brakes
- Same cargo capacity
The biggest differences come down to motors, drivetrains, and displays.
HSD P5i
MSRP: $4,999 USD
The P5i is likely to be the most popular opinion.
Features include:
- Class 1
- Shimano Nexus 5 internal gear hub
- Gates belt drive
- 62 pounds
For many riders, this offers the best balance of price, durability, and low maintenance.
HSD P10e Sport
MSRP: $5,499 USD
The P10e introduces something new for Tern: TRP electronic shifting.
Highlights include:
- Class 3
- Automatic or manual electronic shifting
- Bosch-powered drivetrain electronics
- Derailleur drivetrain
- 90 Nm Bosch motor
- 62.6 pounds
If you're interested in electronic shifting without moving to an internal gear hub, this will likely be the most interesting model.
HSD P00
MSRP: $5,699
The P00 keeps much of the P5i's design but upgrades the rear hub to the Enviolo continuously variable transmission.
Personally, this remains one of my favorite internal shifting systems because it has no fixed-gear steps. Instead, shifting is smooth and continuous.
The tradeoff is roughly:
- +1.7 pounds to 63.7 lbs
- +$600
HSD S9i Sport
MSRP: $7,499
The S9i is Tern's premium HSD model. Additional upgrades include:
- Bosch Kiox 300 display
- Bosch Connect Module
- Integrated alarm and tracking features
- Suntour Mobie 34 suspension fork
- Suspension seatpost
- Class 3 Performance Line Sport motor
- New 3x3 internally geared drivetrain
I'm particularly interested in spending more time with the new 3x3 shifting system and what type of support will be offered in the US.
How to Purchase
Tern is expecting these in North America in late summer.
You can purchase Tern’s in two ways - 1. pre-order through your local Tern dealer or 2. If you don’t have one, you can order through the official Tern store, and they will find a local shop to build it for you, but my guess is the first wave of these bikes will go to local established Tern dealers first.
First impressions
The models have me scratching my head, but I’m sure the North American distributor has their reasons.
My product designer brain has some requests:
- Bring the GSD Lockstand to the HSD! The Lockstand is why I keep riding the GSD with my one kiddo.
- And why is that frame lock still in the back?

Alright, a couple of last things as I close this up.
The HSD is a one-of-a-kind premium cargo bike hauler that easily sells itself in the right cities to someone with the budget. It’s insanely comfortable to ride, and the Tern ecosystem is one of a kind.
Even with the tariffs and insane shipping costs, these bikes are priced well.
