We bought a secondhand Woom 2 with freewheel once my 3-year-old was really proficient and fast on his Strider balance bike because we wanted him to have a handbrake for the gentle hills in our neighborhood. We initially took the pedals off of the Woom 2 for use as a balance bike. After a couple of months we added them back on, but our kid was uninterested in pedaling. Because of the narrow pedals, he had no issue riding this bike as a balance bike even with the pedals on. And then one day at 3 years and 9 months old he started pedaling– such a smooth transition into pedals.
This bike is super solid and will easily make it through another kid and then resale. We did replace the steering limiter that broke during a fall. It was easy, fast, and cheap to order the part. I can definitely see how to design of this bike is fantastic for kids, keeping them with a low center of gravity. Having watched my kid bike for a couple of days without the steering limiter I also really appreciate that feature. It definitely helps to smooth out some the steering wobbliness that comes from a preschooler who isn’t always looking where he’s going.
