The HSD Gen 2 S00 shorttail cargo bike is a new model for Tern using the enviolo heavy duty continuously variable transmission (CVT) internally geared hub, specifically designed for the demands of electric cargo bikes. Paired with the upgraded lighting and built-in Bosch GPS and Alarm, this is going to be a very popular model for Tern.
The easy step-on fit, adjustability from the Andros stem, and ability to fold the handlebar out of the way to store the bike vertically on the rear rack or roll it in small SUVs are brilliant. This is certainly a more premium-priced cargo bike, but if you are looking to make a long-term investment, then you can’t go wrong with the combination of Tern Bikes and Bosch eBike systems.

I was looking for an electric cargo bike that I could use to drop my son off at school and commute to work. I chose the HSD over the GSD because the latter is too long and too heavy for me to maneuver. When the HSD Gen 2 came out, I was excited for the extra load capacity and was ready to take the plunge. I chose the highest trim S00 mainly for its anti-theft features. I justified the extra cost by not getting any bike insurance. Some might say I’m crazy, but I feel secure enough with the bike’s built-in cafe lock, alarm and gps tracking (free for the first year, but still cheaper than bike insurance), and I always lock up my bike with the Abus granite city chain 1060, which I coil around the frame of the bike when I’m riding. For transporting my son, I decided to go with the Gen 2 captain’s chair, and repurposed an old fanny pack into a passenger seatbelt by weaving it around the frame of the captain’s chair, and instead of going with the storm shield, I went with a Weatherpod small, which fits snugly over his chair set up with minimal assembly (there’s just one strap that clicks into place under the seat and that’s about it), and the weatherpod is actually meant to be worn like a backpack, so the shoulder straps combined with the fanny pack waist belt, turns my son’s seat set up into a 3-point harness 👌😊. I upgraded the kickstand to the Gen 3 duostand, which is a must-have safety feature if your child likes to climb into and out of his seat on his own like mine does. Oh and don’t forget, to deter would-be thieves, you can find waterproof gps tracking warning stickers for about $3-5 online, that you can stick on your bike, whether you have gps tracking or not 😉👌. One last fun and cheap tip, I adhered self-stick felt pads on the parts of the bike that comes in contact with the ground when standing the bike upright to protect and ensure the longevity of those parts. I am very grateful to online electric cargo bike communities, like this one, that empowers me to own and maintain my bike and continue to ride.
