I bought my gen 2 GSD just over 2 years ago and have ridden 12,400km at time of writing. The TLDR is that after 6 months of ownership we sold the family Volvo as it was sitting unused on the road, it’s that good.

The GSD is super fun to ride, stable at any speed and extremely capable as a cargo bike, I’ve hauled everything from 3 seater sofas to kitchen tables on the back as well as completing the weekly family grocery shop with both kids towed behind in a trailer (the tow hitch was very easy to fit with the pre drilled holes in the rear frame) It’s also taken all kinda of environmental abuse from salty British roads to muddy forest tracks (my daily commute is through a reasonably rough forest) it’s been through rain, sleet and snow and has been ridden nearly every day for the last 2+ years.
Needless to say we love the bike and due to the flexibility of terns cargo bikes both me and my wife can ride it, even though there’s a foot difference in our heights.

+ PROS: +No longer than my normal mountain bike. +The LX package is a must for me, the high/low beam headlight is very clear and extremely bright. +Vertical standing is fantastic for maintenance tasks. +Very hard wearing. +Exceptional at hauling up hills. +Super stable at any speed. +Very standard transmission means fantastic parts availability from just about every bike shop around. +Very good brakes.
    - CONS: +mud guards end a little early so buying or making extenders is a must for winter riders. +Centre stand will go rusty if you ride on salty roads but it's still functioning just fine. +Centre stand lock can get jammed full of dirt needing regular cleaning. This can be fixed with a front mudguard extension. +Chain maintenance can be a bore and can get pricey when riding in poor dirty conditions. +Riding in hilly areas the brakes can wear quickly. Playing with different brake compounds can make a big difference here. +Paint can chip very easily so be careful what you do with your security chain.

    Solid bike.

+ PROS: I’ve ridden about 2200 miles in about one year on the spike. It’s my third cargo bike. I’ve had a tricycle bike and I’ve also had a cheap E bike. (Rad wagon). I’ve biked with my twins since they were one years old. What I really like about this bike is that it’s very solid and very stable. And it doesn’t feel like it’s gonna tip even if the kids are leaning it’s pretty solid. They did manage to tip it a couple times when I first got it because my daughter kept standing up when I was going really slow and I had a couple slow motion crashes, which showed me that that bike was made with amazing design and nobody got anything hurt, including me when the bike fell on all of us. The geometry of that you were very protected, especially with the kids monkey bars. The brakes don’t get loose, and everything stays as it should My two prior bikes, I was constantly tightening the brakes It was super annoying I really appreciate that. They actually do what they are supposed to on the gsd. It’s also really quiet. My son who’s on the autism spectrum immediately remarked that it was so much better because it was so much quieter. I must admit I have great pleasure and how quiet it is and the clicking of the tire is also enjoyable. We have the really big I forgot what they are called the foot extenders on the back so that you could actually set grocery bags on them. It’s also so that my kids can climb on and step onto that and I also feel their feet are safer if they have a bigger space to put them because they have big feet now. I have lumber, a ladder, Multiple kids adults, large adults, Saw horses. Whatever I’ve wanted to figure out, I think I can get on this bike. It’s very fun. I don’t have a trailer, but I think that would be a good fun thing. I’ve been Bike home with the kids and a ton of groceries and I can put a kid or two and their bike or two on the bike and get home if somebody or everybody is tired It’s really beautiful bike.
    - CONS: Tight for two older kids. I had average height slim 7yo twins when I got it and they fought within 30 sec of getting on the bike until I put the curved bar on the back which is meant to be used with the Yepp seats. They had actually ridden on the rad wagon without any real issues. It doesn’t drive that fast we go somewhere between maybe 12 to 15 miles an hour when I’m trying hard on mostly flat roads, which was also considerably slower than my last bike. This is a pro & a con because I think it’s probably safe if I’m riding slower, but everything takes a lot longer. The slower speed also means that it’s less of a car replacement than my prior bike. The brakes and rotors really were out fast. I had to replace everything under 2000 miles. I’m not a heavy breaker and I don’t weigh very much and my kids don’t weigh very much. I think our combined weight was under 250lb. The seat also angles back pretty far so that it’s kind of sitting a little bit into the back passengers. Space when the storm guard is up my seat is like parked in the storm guard and pushes the whole thing back even when I have it pushed forward as far as possible. I bought a new stem that doesn’t have a setback on it and that helps a little bit, but it still sits back in the passenger, pushing on the whole thing when my kids are in it. It bothers me to have my butt in that thing and it bothers them to have it pushed back By the seat The battery is OK. I kind of thought it would be better and had longer life than my old cheapie bike, but it really has nothing longer than the other one and I’m not even sure it could possibly be a little bit less as far as mileage goes per charge. I wish there was a better set up for the back to use the storm guard without everything that’s on there on the top. The way the monkey bars are situated in the back. It’s hard for the kids to slide their legs forward if they’re in the front because it blocks them and in the back it also blocks them. On my prior bike one of my kids like to ride facing backwards and one rode it facing forward and that Prevented so much fighting. I know it wasn’t recommended, but it was so much easier. It’s not an option on this bike.

This is the second GSD that I’ve owned as I previously had the Gen 1 GSD. We loved our Gen 1 GSD, but now that our oldest was getting bigger and I sometimes ended up hauling three kids at once, we needed to upgrade to a bike with more hauling capability. And if our decision was solely based on capacity and ride quality we would have upgraded to a Yuba Spicy Curry or Yuba Mundo, which are all larger and more comfortable for older passengers. However, we live in San Francisco and the bike is our primary form of transportation and so we also need a bike that is relatively easy to lock up, store in a crowded garage, and occasionally bring on to commuter trains. The Riese & Muller Multitinker was considered, but its passenger capacity was even lower than the Gen 1 GSD.

All in all, we are very happy with the GSD. It’s the not the perfect cargo bike, but It’s the optimal large enough cargo bike. We can easily haul 2 or 3 kids and all their belongings. The motor is strong enough to get us all around San Francisco. It’s compact enough that I can bring it onto the commuter train within regulaton. It fits into a space in our garage that the Yubas would not fit into. And it’s pretty easy to lockup around town on racks, street signs, and parking meters.

We are no2 1500 miles into our Gen 2 GSD and it’s the only bike that fits into our life. That said we like the ride feel of the more nimble Gen 1 GSD and our Quick Haul for carrying one child.
As for the drivetrain, we did not consider the Enviolo (too inefficient) and Rohloff (too expensive). We test rode the Enviolo and it is noticeably less powerful going up steep hills with a full load of passengers. Also, routine maintenance is something I’m good and quick at and it’s really not a big deal. We’ve had one rear wheel flat so far and I’m very glad that we did not have the Enviolo. I repaired the flat in less than 10 minutes (always carry a spare tube), of which a good amount of time was removing the Cargo Hold bags. The

    Our setup:
    – Dual Battery. If you live in a hilly area the Bosch motor will operate better. The dual battery isn’t just about capacity, but heat management. The bike noticeably sustains max assist up a long steep hill with two batteries than with one.
    – For passengers we have the Clubhouse+ with two pads with backrests. LED Stringlight also adorn the clubhouse. The bike came with the Clubhouse, but I would definitely prefer the Rolling Jackass Passenger Rail system which is much more versatile and customizable.
    – Cargo Hold 52 Panniers
    – Transporteur Rack with Weathertop Bag. This setup can’t be beat for the front. We’ve tried crates and boxes, but the Weathertop is the most versatile.
    – Redshift Arclight Pedals
    – Hiplok DX1000 angle resistant lock. My favorite bike lock that I’ve ever owned. The locking action is so smooth.
    – Spare tube & CO2 inflater. It’s a cargo bike–I want the shortest roadside repairs possible.

+ PROS: - Optimal bike that strikes balances between size and cargo capacity. Longtail bike capacity in a shorter midtail footprint. - Max cargo capacity is enough for 3 kids. - Plenty of secure locking points - Bosch Cargo Line motor. It's got the torque to haul the 440 max load up long and steep hills - Durable paint. It handles slight knocks for hardened locks well. - The front light is much better than the Valo light on lower end models
    - CONS: - Fussier routine maintenance than the Gen 1 GSD like lubing the chain and changing brake pads. - I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer the rigid fork of the Gen 1 over the Gen 2. It - Heavier than the Gen 1 GSD. But it's still lighter than most other comparable bikes -
