Love the bike and so does the family. Wife was a little sceptical with us buying this as our second car. Now we use it daily 3k miles a year. It’s expensive if you look at it as just a bike, but it’s really a second car. We live in downtown Chicago. Unless we’re leaving town it’s our primary grocery getter, school transport and fun runner. Zero stress parking if we go to busy areas. We use rain or shine and all winter. Love the low maintenance belt drive in the slop. It’s the only cargo bike that sits on its tail, allowing us to store in the building bike room.

+ PROS: Easily adjustable riding position for different size rides. Compact in the city. Stores on tail. Almost zero maintenance with belt drive and Bosch motor. It's been super reliable compared to friends who bought cheap Chinese bikes. Makes mundane trips fun for everyone. Motor takes all the bad things about riding a bike away but you still get organic bike experience instead of riding a moto with throttle.
    - CONS: Steep cost for entry into this market if you aren't completely sold on it replacing a car.

We wanted a e-cargo bike to ride our twin toddlers around the city and nearby park trails. Tested a Midtail and Boxed Front (bakfiet)and enjoyed the feel of the midtail since it is closest to a regular bike ride. We upgraded to the GSD S00 LX because of all the features (suspension seatpost, belt drive, Enviolo Hub).

Our Tern GSD purchase was a long term investment as we plan to use it until our kids are older. We wanted an established company with known bike components. With so many start-up eBike brands that don’t make it we were okay purchasing a premium bike with the Bosch Dual Battery system for the long haul.

+ PROS: Works for different rider heights, a TON of accessories available from Tern, reliable Bosch system, can add additional battery, no adapter needed for Yepp Max seats.
    - CONS: Price of accessories can add up, bike can get heavy and hard to balance with rear passengers

I upgraded to the enviolo belt drive GSD a year ago, in 2023, after nearly 5 years riding a 2018 RadWagon. Over time it became my primary mode of transport with my kid, now 6. We live in Seattle and use bikes to get almost everywhere. Now we have a second kid and I love that the GSD can carry them both without a second thought. We don’t have a garage so I park it vertically in our small entryway (the poor RadWagon had to live outside). I chose the enviolo model partly because I was so used to having a throttle to start from a stop or incline, or if I forgot to downshift optimally. Twisting the right handle can still solve (most of) my problems! The bike is essentially perfect and it is hard to overstate how essential it is in my family’s everyday life and how much better life is when biking for transportation is the default. We only drive when our destination is more than 5-10 miles away or transit is impractical. Join me!

+ PROS: Vertical parking, nearly zero maintenance belt, twist shift to fix your mistakes from a stop, holds everything, easy to add a trailer if you need even more everything, compatible with nearly all kid seats and panniers and slings imaginable, amazing line of accessories that solves all your problems. Easy to share between two riders and even fit in your minivan if it comes to it.
    - CONS: I can't take it on Amtrak (too heavy) or a plane (thanks batteries) or most buses (too big/heavy). My older kid's feet drag on the ground during turns if she doesn't pay attention. Technically the chain model is a tad zippier on each level of assist because the belt is less efficient but I don't have to think about chain grease ever again so I'm OK with that. No throttle or regenerative braking. Doesn't store vertically with certain accessories installed, so I have to take the rear Yepp seat off every time I get home, but thankfully it's Easy(Fit). The whole thing was close to $10k after accessories and tax...! which is still cheaper than most cars, but not as easy to get a loan for if you don't have $10k lying around. It does not, in fact, automatically replace its own brake pads or fix its own flat tires. Weather still exists, for you and your passengers.
