GSD R14 SPECS
Maurice Kinkead –
I bought the GSD R14 after looking at and test riding other GSDs, other Terns and other brands incl R&M. I have no regrets.
I have no car so this is my sole vehicle, along with occasional public transport. Main uses are taking 2 grandkids to school, shopping and general getting around town as well as regular day rides and camping trips to various locations.
I find the bike great for my purposes and the kids love it – definitely their preferred mode of transport. I have a 600×400 crate for the back clubhouse and a big shop is easy as the crate fits perfectly in supermarket trolleys.
The range from the Rohloff is great, tho I rarely drop below 8th gear except when starting on a steep hill with kids on board
Servicing is pretty easy – I am no mechanic tho have managed to do all the basics myself. However I leave it with an experienced and Bosch qualified mechanic at least once a year for a full service.
Reliability over my 2+ years ownership has been excellent. I have upgraded to pickup tyres with tannus inserts to avoid inconvenient punctures and I also inspect tyres pretty regularly. The headlight failed within warranty and was replaced. The front forks are the weak spot, as on other brands. They will fail unless serviced as recommended which for me is at unreasonable intervals. I have it dismantled and serviced annually and plan to replace at year 3.
The bike is heavy but not unreasonably so.
If I had to replace the bike I would either buy the same again or possibly the rohloff Orox
