WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND LOCATION?

Renee Jordan, Plano, TX

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Recreationally with a club or alone; commuting to work; occassional dirt ride

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

Riding my first bike, purple with a banana seat & ape hanger type bars, in semi-rural North Carolina up and down the hilly asphalted road in front of my house…these early times on my bike were my first real independent adventures (no parents, no little sister in tow.)

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

I’m not really inspired by anyone in particular, but rather by the fun of riding & the experiences you have while riding…it keeps me going back for more

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Some of my best moments were late this summer, returning to the bike after some time off for an injury, riding around the nature preserve alone, at sunset.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND LOCATION?

Amar, Los Angeles, CA

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Commuting, Touring, Recreational

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

I didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was a senior in college, so my first memory is of being entirely certain that I was going to lose my balance and swerve into the path of an oncoming Metro Bus. Hasn’t happened yet, although I did lose my balance many times and became quite familiar with the pavement in the parking lot of the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

My husband. He loves riding for the sheer joy of it and I always want to join in on that happiness. It was a lot more fraught for me for a very long time, until I started commuting regularly and didn’t have to focus so hard on the mechanics of riding. Now I can capture some of that freedom and joy when I ride too. Also, I hate idling in traffic and worrying about parking. To me, it’s easier to just bike everywhere and with our traffic it takes about the same amount of time as driving.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

For our wedding anniversary my husband and I biked from Seattle to Portland with a friend of ours. It was so beautiful and fun. I think about that trip whenever I need to relax!

Surly Long Haul Trucker in a pretty blue color. Setup is pretty upright since I have a bad back and am finicky about positioning. I catch wind like a kite but I’m not exactly built for speed anyways ;)

WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND LOCATION?

Louise Cheetham, Baton Rouge, LA

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Road, Mountain

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

I used to sit on the back of my mom’s cruiser, on the gear rack. We went to the neighborhood store like that until I got my foot caught in the back wheel. Foot in the back wheel is what I remember.

After that my parents bought me a kids size Raleigh racing bike. It was red to white fade. Man, I miss the 80s.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

My mom, Janet and my coach, Stacey. These two women ride their bikes through it all. My mom is recovering from cancer and got back on her bike as soon as she could. Stacey is a very busy businesswoman and mom and still rides her bike every day.

I want to love it and be as dedicated as they are!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

This year? Has to be leading out my teammate, Allie Hurst, for the win at the Vuelta d’Acadiana. Just a local race on our calendar. But I got my 1 min max power and took her to the line to outsprint some out of towners. Take that Texas!

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

I have a hand me down mountain bike that I bomb around on and raced for the first time this year :)
My road bike is my dream bike, a Cannondale Supersix Hi-Mod with dura-ace. Best bike I have ever ridden.
That’s the complete stable. I have to err on the side of too few as my wonderful cyclist man has 4 and its getting cramped in here!

Motivational Monday with Martha Van Inwegen

What’s your name and location?

Martha Van Inwegen of Action Wipes (my favorite body wipes) – Central Coast, California

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Casual – usually along the beach or just to do errands.

What is your first cycling memory?

The first time I was able to ride a bike by myself. My dad worked part time for a moving company and someone gave him a kids bike. He put it in the garage and said one day he would teach me how to ride it. I was in 1st grade. After school, I’d get on the bike, use the house walls to support me and then let go down the drive way. Soon, I was pedaling all over the neighborhood. I taught myself. My dad didn’t know until the day came when he could teach me. Boy, was he surprised.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My husband. He rides a single speed MTB and loves it. Watching how he pushes himself up a climb while loving every minute inspires me to get on my own bike. The adrenaline that pumps through his vans and the energy it gives him afterwards is amazing. Now I must admit, getting inspired and actually doing it are two different things. I’m very guilty of just enjoying the sport of cycling as a spectator ;)

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Every road that leads to our home is a hill of some sort. Then there’s our driveway – a steep climb. My best moment was making it up one of the hills and only having to stop twice, then getting half way up the driveway when I got home! Woohoo!!

Tell us all about your bikes

I have a Jamis road bike. Nothing fancy, but it get’s me where I need to go. Again, I use it primarily to run errands and on casual rides. My favorite bike was stolen 10 years ago and I still dream of it. It was the coolest mash-up of an all chrome Schwinn frame with Harley Davidson handle bars. You could see me coming for miles it shone so bright. I bought it at the San Diego swap meet and it really broke my heart when it disappeared.

Motivational Monday with Michelle

What’s your name and location?

Michelle from Iowa

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Recreational road, touring, mtb, and dabbling in CX since I now own two ‘cross bikes and I figure I better represent.

What is your first cycling memory?

My brother helping me learn how to ride a bike in our backyard. It was my neighbor’s yellow bike that was way too big for me but falling on the lawn made it less traumatic.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

Myself, it has always been something I’ve enjoyed. From when I first learned to ride and could go on mini adventures by myself to the park up the street, to riding around the “country block” on gravel roads when we moved out of town, to commuting to class in college, and then I really got into cycling after college as a way to stay in shape, socialize with others on group rides, ride RAGBRAI, and more recently, doing some bike touring around the midwest. It’s also a great stress reliever, a great time to think deeply and also mash out any frustrations I might have from life off the bike.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

I bought a new bike this year, a Lynskey Cooper CX (it’s pretty much my dream bike), so taking the first ride on it was freakin’ amazing! Especially since I went from an aluminum frame to titanium, it was like going from a station wagon to a sports car. It met all my expectations and then some.

Tell us all about your bikes

Lynskey Cooper CX, Trek XO1, Trek 4300, recently sold my Fuji Absolute converted single speed.

What’s your name and location?

Laurie in Ithaca, NY

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Utilitarian (doing errands), backroads

What is your first cycling memory?

Getting the training wheels off as a kid and riding on my driveway!

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

I see people of all ages and appearance on bikes in my town..riding to work on freezing cold windy days, out and about with young kids coming along behind..this inspires me because of my love of seeing people outdoors, not using gas, connecting to nature.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

I realized this summer that my dog enjoyed biking with me, clipped to my bike with a device called a Springer. She can’t run off and she can’t pull me over.

Tell us all about your bikes

An old secondhand mountain bike from a friend leaving town for $200. Got it tuned up and new tires for $200. Don’t even know the maker! Now I am planning a bike trip with friends for this summer. I might go to Cape Breton as the pictures are irresistible.
