Motivational Monday with Martha Van Inwegen

What’s your name and location?

Martha Van Inwegen of Action Wipes (my favorite body wipes) – Central Coast, California

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Casual – usually along the beach or just to do errands.

What is your first cycling memory?

The first time I was able to ride a bike by myself. My dad worked part time for a moving company and someone gave him a kids bike. He put it in the garage and said one day he would teach me how to ride it. I was in 1st grade. After school, I’d get on the bike, use the house walls to support me and then let go down the drive way. Soon, I was pedaling all over the neighborhood. I taught myself. My dad didn’t know until the day came when he could teach me. Boy, was he surprised.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My husband. He rides a single speed MTB and loves it. Watching how he pushes himself up a climb while loving every minute inspires me to get on my own bike. The adrenaline that pumps through his vans and the energy it gives him afterwards is amazing. Now I must admit, getting inspired and actually doing it are two different things. I’m very guilty of just enjoying the sport of cycling as a spectator ;)

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Every road that leads to our home is a hill of some sort. Then there’s our driveway – a steep climb. My best moment was making it up one of the hills and only having to stop twice, then getting half way up the driveway when I got home! Woohoo!!

Tell us all about your bikes

I have a Jamis road bike. Nothing fancy, but it get’s me where I need to go. Again, I use it primarily to run errands and on casual rides. My favorite bike was stolen 10 years ago and I still dream of it. It was the coolest mash-up of an all chrome Schwinn frame with Harley Davidson handle bars. You could see me coming for miles it shone so bright. I bought it at the San Diego swap meet and it really broke my heart when it disappeared.

Falling off my bike when I was 5, and being so mad at the bike I didn’t ride again for 20 years.

There are a lot of women I see around Little Rock I envy and it’s that envy/jealousy that makes me want to ride. And I like the cool wind in my face.

Motivational Monday with Michelle

What’s your name and location?

Michelle from Iowa

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Recreational road, touring, mtb, and dabbling in CX since I now own two ‘cross bikes and I figure I better represent.

What is your first cycling memory?

My brother helping me learn how to ride a bike in our backyard. It was my neighbor’s yellow bike that was way too big for me but falling on the lawn made it less traumatic.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

Myself, it has always been something I’ve enjoyed. From when I first learned to ride and could go on mini adventures by myself to the park up the street, to riding around the “country block” on gravel roads when we moved out of town, to commuting to class in college, and then I really got into cycling after college as a way to stay in shape, socialize with others on group rides, ride RAGBRAI, and more recently, doing some bike touring around the midwest. It’s also a great stress reliever, a great time to think deeply and also mash out any frustrations I might have from life off the bike.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

I bought a new bike this year, a Lynskey Cooper CX (it’s pretty much my dream bike), so taking the first ride on it was freakin’ amazing! Especially since I went from an aluminum frame to titanium, it was like going from a station wagon to a sports car. It met all my expectations and then some.

Tell us all about your bikes

Lynskey Cooper CX, Trek XO1, Trek 4300, recently sold my Fuji Absolute converted single speed.

Cycling Websites Worth Your Time

On Twitter it is called Follow Friday or #FF, where you mention your friends that you believe are worth other people’s time to follow.  Every once in a while I’ll throw up the links and websites that I am frequenting or that are motivating me to get on my bike, get on my keyboard or inspiring me to inspire others.

MomentumPlanet.com – smart living by bike

The fine folks at Momentum have been nothing but nice to me over the years.   Just a great group of people at events to spend your time with.  Also, the fact that they are some of the most cheerful people I have ever met in the bicycle industry is very helpful as well.

PavedMag.com – From the makers of Bike

This magazine put my faith back into road cycling.   Yes, I love cycing and I love bikes but every road niche magazine out thee shoves high end bikes and racing down your throat.  What about the passion of riding?  This magazine does it.

JeffKerkove.net – Mr. 24 himself

Pro endurance cyclist, and everything Ergon in the USA.

Milltown Cycles

A bike shop doing it right in Faribault, MN.

Grizzly Adam - Biker, Skier and Fabulous Photographer

I read this site and I feel like an anti-epic slacker.  The photos, the stories and the inspiration is all there.
