What is your name and location?

Kristin Apotsos, Melbourne Beach, Florida

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Cyclocross, mountain biking, riding bikes to school with my 2 kids, I want to like road cycling

What is your first cycling memory?

I felt like a hot shot when I was given my neighbor’s robin egg blue Schwinn with a sparkly banana seat. Several years later, my Dad painted it metallic copper. I was proud of that bike. It’s a shame that my kids have not experienced the beauty and comfort of a banana seat.

Who inspires you to ride? Better yet, why?

There is nothing more motivational than been getting spanked in cyclocross. Since moving up to CAT 3, I’ve been blown away by the power and endurance of my competition. I also have huge admiration for cyclists who compete in RAAM (Race Across America) and other extreme cycling events. Two years ago I followed the progress of an amazing local competitor & part-owner of our local bike shop (INFINITY Bike Shop!). He must have superior pain management skills.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Hands down, the best moment on a bike thus far in 2013 was taking an an orange popsicle hand up from a man wearing an orange full body suit during the Florida State Cyclocross Championships. It was my second race of the day. It was hot. It tasted awesome.

Tell us what you ride

I own four bikes and am seeking a fifth. My oldest bike is a green ’98 Specialized Stumpjumper. We have a long history together. We’ve done mountain bike races, 12-hour races, triathlons, and now cyclocross races together. I also own a full suspension Trek Fuel EX, a WSD Trek Madone 5.2, and a turquoise vintage Raleigh cruiser which is used for errands and towing surf & paddle boards. I am shopping for a carbon CX bike with a lot of character and a small price tag. As corny as this sounds, I trust destiny will bring us together. I’d love to add a single speed to the family as well.

What is your name and location?

Suzanne E. San Diego California

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Road, Track and baby trailer park hopping

What is your first cycling memory?

I was four and the much bigger neighbor kid got a banana seat bike with ape hangers. I asked to try it. I could barely reach the pedals and I could not touch the floor so they held on while I got started. It felt like flying! Until I went to turn around and realized I also was too small to steer… Of course I crashed at that point but oh the feeling of flying with the wind in my hair and sun on my face was so worth the bloody knees and elbows!

Who inspires you to ride? Better yet, why?

My friend Matt and my angel friend Melissa. Matt has been an incredible support to me through training and weight loss helping me to make the changes I needed in my head and heart to make the changes in my body. He has coached and encouraged me, ridden with me and even physically pushed me home one day when my body quit at the tail end of a 48 miler. Melissa was my best friend. She coached me through a couple of triathlons she would ride with me when nobody else wanted to and when I was wanting to quit she’d say “suck it up princess” I have that message written on the top tubes of my bike and some days I can almost hear her yelling it at me with a laugh. I continue because she can’t.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

My first day back on two wheels after being sidelined for 8 weeks for with illness. The air was cold and it prickled every part of my body and burned my lungs, my legs felt like alternating lead and rubber but the sun was shining and when I turned my face towards it I could forget all the pain an uncertanty- I was four again and I was Flying!

Tell us what you ride

My trusty steed is my 2010 Cannondale six-triple-six. We have been to hell and back together a few times and even over to Paradise (Kona, Hi) twice and Washington D.C for Olympic Distance Triathlons! I hated it when I first got it -my instrument of torture but Matt did a proper fit for me and it was like the angels came out and sang!

A 2010 Gary Fisher Mountain bike which I have converted to commute and is the draft horse of my fleet it now pulls the newest addition the Trek baby trailer that pulls the kids and even the dog on park hopping adventures!

In November right before my illness and in the very last week of track season I purchased a 2012 Dolan track bike(fixed gear). I have ridden it only once and it has done hundreds of miles in my trunk- in pieces but track season starts next week and I am ready to make it fly too… I may ride slowly but it still makes my heart fly!

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Road and recreational

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

My itty-bitty blue sparkly Schwinn with the blue-and-white streamers!

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

Who … well, I live in a town full of cyclists, and seeing folks on bikes around me all the time is a near-constant inspiration to stay on two wheels. Why? Because riding is the most awesome thing ever: it’s transportation, freedom, exercise, a moving meditation, a way to quiet the mind while letting the body do its thing, a way to make the planet a better place, and a shameless excuse for ogling hot guys and girls in spandex.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Pulling into the tiny general store in Hygiene, CO on my weekly Saturday ride for a halfway-there break of fresh lemonade, a water-bottle refill and a lounge on their lovely green lawn. Such a perfect routine!

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

Shiny Red is a Globe Daily 3 (step-through, seven-speed internal hub) with a bitchin’ handmade wooden milk crate that my dad built out of scrap cedar from my folks’ back porch and a badge from Farnsworth Bicycle Laboratory, my friend’s art shop in Lawrence, KS. I spent three months tracking this bike down and ended up finally finding her on a weekend road trip ten hours away from home.

Ruby (who is blue) is a Specialized Ruby Comp, my first real road bike, purchased this summer after a months-long Craigslist saga that actually involved two separate bicycles and a little bit of heartbreak (and broken carbon). We’re still getting to know each other in one of those sort of slow-blooming romances. Shiny Red is jealous, but they’re both taking it pretty well.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND LOCATION?

Julia, Gainesville, FL

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

All: Road, MTB, multi-use trails with the family

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

Crashing on my banana seat bike in the second grade and getting stitches from splitting my lip on that big Y frame handle bar!! Good times!

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

Myself, my friends and family. I enjoy being healthy and riding outside. I love riding in Gainesville, we have so many trees and wonderful places to ride. San Feslasco is a mountain bike paradise with beautiful deer and challenging elevations.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Sharing events with my son. I am really excited about the youth development races that I am starting to see pop up more and more. I think it is important to spark more interest with outreach programs like youth races and youth mountain bike series or occasional lessons in the community. I have seen a few LBS sponsor not only a Summer MTB race series, but also a meet and greet with a few lessons. I love this. I think it fosters a long term love not only for cycling but for the places where they get to cycle.

We have nine bikes in our garage at this moment: My old MTB, my road bike, my boyfriend’s road bike, his rain bike, his commuter bike, his MTB, My son’s road bike, his commuter (MTB) bike and my other son’s commuter bike. We will be adding a Cx bike and another MTB bike this year. SO excited!!!

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Mountain Biking

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

My ten speed when I was like 10? But the one I’ll never forget is when I was roped into going out with 6 or 7 women friends. They lent me their bike and said, “You’ll like it.” I wasn’t so sure. I told them that I would “probably hate it” and that I would meet them back at the car if I only lasted a few minutes. Well, that evening I said to my boyfriend, “I’m going to need my own bike.”

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

I am inspired by being able to ride. By having the gift of movement. By having the priviledge of riding. By having the awesome luck to have a great bike. I am inspired by my mom who had a stroke at age 49 that left her in a wheelchair and later died at 58 of ovarian cancer. I am inspired all the time.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

The downhill portion of a Winter Park race. Watching my daughters race. And the short track race when I passed three girls. And the days I see high school girls (I am an assistant mountain bike coach) do things they thought they couldn’t do. Sorry–I know you only said moment not moments!

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

I enjoy commuting, touring, alley cats, and I would like to try mountain biking!

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

I grew up on a farm. I was the oldest child, and we had a Schwinn Stingray out in one of the machine sheds. I got it out and asked if we had training wheels. “Nope,” was the answer. I was 5 years old. I decide by the end of the day, I would have learned to ride that bike, and that’s just what I did. We only had gravel and dirt roads to ride on, and I spent most waking hours on that beautiful bike. I tried to fly like Evel Knievel out of a livestock loading chute, rode it off the roofs of small buildings, through pastures and along creeks. I had a few skinned knees, but I was hooked! I have loved that feeling ever since.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

I’m not sure who… I don’t know if I have any one person I look up to for biking inspiration. The WHY is much easier–I love the freedom of getting almost anywhere I need to on my own power. I love the way I am fully awake as I pedal along the Greenway silently in the morning, and how I’ve had time to think ahead about my day. I ride because lots of 50-year-old women DON’T ride, and I think I’m pretty cool to do that. I ride because it feels amazing. I ride because it’s the right thing to do.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

I think pulling into Peacock Groove at the end of the Babes in Bikeland all women/trans alleycat race, with my team, the Old Souls, was probably the best! We were exhilarated to have found all of our stops and made it back before the official end of the race. The beers tasted so good, and everyone was jubilant! I was really happy to have ridden with such awesome WTFs and we finished! YAY!

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

I started my re-engagement in biking by fulfilling my dream of rebuilding an old bike, from the frame up. I rebuilt a ’79 Fuji steel framed bike at Grease Rag. So, I have that beautiful old girl, a KHS hybrid that I ride in the winter, and two Salsas; a Vaya and a Casseroll. I confess I look at Craigslist CONSTANTLY and I’m always drooling over the next possible bike!

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Triathlon/Shop & club group rides

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

You will be horrified to know that I did not ride a bike without training wheels until I was I believe EIGHT years old. I have some foggy recollections of my dad trying to teach me at a park, but it was a childhood friend that literally gave me the push I needed in the third grade.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

I’ve come a very long way since the days of third grade, and now I regularly help lead rides out of our local bike shop… Two groups of people highly motivate me. The first is the Cat 2/3/4 roadie guys that drive the pace really hard every Saturday morning, one being the owner of our bike shop whom I work for. The group of local triathletes that am lucky enough to call my “Iron-brothers” whom helped me prepare for my first 140.6 also keep the dream alive, they got me started on this journey.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

I think one of the most exciting moments on the bike this past year was back in April at the USAT Collegiate National Championships. The atmosphere at that race is incredible, with over 1,200 college students bringing the spirit of over 100 schools all together for one race… Coming into the turn-around point for the second lap of the bike during the women’s race, the hundreds of men that were waiting for their start lined up three-deep to cheer on the girls. I was so proud to be wearing Coastal Carolina’s black and teal out on that course.

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

I lovingly call my bikes my “babies,” and I have been known to kiss my race bike goodnight. I own a Trek Speed Concept tri bike named “Dr. Pink” that I love to bring in great splits on, then there’s my Trek Madone road bike named “Spangle” that I do fun group rides on, and last but not least I have a classic steel Trek cruiser called “Rosie” which I use during the summer months, especially back when I used to ride to work as a lifeguard at the beach.

Lori, North Carolina

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Road riding and mountain biking

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

Of course, learning to ride when I was 5 or 6.

What really gave me the bug for riding the road…a friend and I went to ride Railroad Grade Road. It’s a 10-mile stretch of flat road all along the New River. Our main objective was to run over all the wooly worms we could find. And I found a sense of freedom that day that I could go anywhere on my bike and didn’t need a car all the time.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

My 17-month old son. I’m 41. I have to stay in shape to keep up with him.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

24 Hours of Booty in Charlotte, NC. I did my first century since giving birth. I could have ridden more but I didn’t want to kill myself in the 100 degree heat. I did 80+ miles between 10pm-2pm.

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

2008 Bianchi Valentina, full carbon, even the carbon tubulars.
2006 Bianchi 928. Used to be my main road bike until Valentina showed up. Now it’s set up as a flat-bar road bike I used to pull my son in his Chariot on the Greenway.
2005 Bianchi Axis – cross bike we love to ride the dirt road with.
2008 Santa Cruz Blur XC. I love this bike. So much fun although I ride it less than any of the others.
2007 Redline R77 – my nasty weather road bike…bought the frame for $75. Built it up full Sram Rival…it’s 16lbs…lighter than a friend’s bike who paid almost $4k for hers. hahaha
AND, 2000 Santana Arriva tandem. Ofcourse, I have to shard this one with my husband…we LOVE this bike. Nobody wants to ride with us because we HAUL ASS!!

WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND LOCATION?

Nicole in Memphis, TN

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

City cycling (commuting by bike), group rides with friends or my husband, light mountain biking

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

How about my most powerful cycling memory? I met my husband on my 1st metric century ride and he proposed on that same ride 2 years later. He put signs up near the end of the ride with a poem he had written. I didn’t get it at first (silly me) but when I saw the last sign, I knew. We stopped our bikes and he asked me to marry him. I said yes and like any good bikers, we finished the ride, ate a hearty breakfast and then came back for pictures!

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

I inspire me. Cycling in Memphis can be…challenging. It is getting better but you have to be committed to biking to take on a 15 mile, each-way commute to work on a 100 degree, 98% humidity day. But, the challenge is part of why I make it a point to do it. It is part of staying healthy, supporting a greener planet and being less car dependent.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Our city has been converting old train tracks into multi-use paths and recently I was out on my own, tooling down the path. It was a perfect 75 degree day, the sun was out, and no one was vying for space in front or behind me. As I reached the end of the path and prepared to head out onto a traffic-filled street, I realized to my amazement that the next section of path had been finished since my last trek. It made my week, to continue along for another five miles in quiet solitude enjoying the beautiful weather and zipping along on two wheels.

WHAT TYPE OF CYCLING DO YOU ENJOY?

Cyclocross, and just getting out to ride. I’m thinking about trying out track this next year…

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST CYCLING MEMORY?

For Easter my mom would make clues from the easter bunny. It lead me to my very first two-wheel bike! It was pink with pompom like strands coming out of the handle bars.

WHO INSPIRES YOU TO RIDE, AND BETTER YET WHY?

Hope this doesn’t sound selfish…but I inspire myself. Getting out riding gives me time to think, and is a little break. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve found something that I absolutely love to do, and challenges me every step of the way. I can’t do it w/out the support of my husband and kids (we have 6 kids..ages 12-2). My new cycling friends inspire me, and the commuters I see riding to work every day. Especially the one this morning carrying his bike cross style over a snow bank!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT ON THE BIKE SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Just one? I actually started riding for the first time this year in June. (It had been since I was probably about 12, and I’m 33 now..) My friend talked me into doing a triathlon with her. I hate running, and swimming wasn’t a big deal, so I spent most of my training on a bike. I stumbled into a bike shop, and ended up YouTubing cyclocross…and in July bought my cyclocross bike. I’d have to say…this being my first season racing bike/cross IN MY LIFE that finally being able to ride through the blasted sand felt absolutely freaking amazing!!

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BIKES

I am the proud owner of a KHS CX-200. It’s a beautiful bright green and my new addiction. I had butterflies in my stomach for days after buying her. I go through withdrawals if I don’t get to ride at least twice a week!
