Motivational Monday with Miranda

0 Motivational Monday Melinda

What’s your name and location?

Miranda from Dallas, y’all

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Relaxed rides on trails and around lakes, commuter biking, road biking.

What is your first cycling memory?

Oh my goodness, this is an intense one. I remember riding around the church parking lot across from my house. My papa was watching my sisters and me and I wanted to show off my sweet moves for him. As I peddled around in dizzying circles, I lost control and fell hands first into the gravel. Since Papa was already old (he was my great grandfather), it took him a bit to come over. By the time he arrived, the blood had already congealed and covered up the piece of rock buried in my hand. Papa had only one choice. As he took out his pocket knife to clean it, my four year old self screamed bloody murder. My sisters held me down while Papa used the knife to cut the rock out of my hand and the hanging skin around it. I made it home where my mom bandaged it up. Definitely not a memory I easily forgot!

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

I don’t know exactly who inspires me. I ride because it is a time to be by myself, to think, to experience the world, to spend time with God if you will. Yes, I love to ride with my friends, but biking has usually been about getting rid of stress or finding peace in the crazy days.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Probably while I was in a small village called Santinetikan in India. There were no cars, so everyone got around by bike, foot, or motorcycle. We were able to rent out these (terrible) vintage, slightly rusted cruisers to get around. As the sun was setting and the rice workers were coming in, the twilight called all the lightning bugs out to play. I remember looking up at the dusky sky, surrounded by jungle and fireflies and all I could think of (which is cheesy I know) is that I am experiencing something magical. I wish everyone could experience that moment, stopping by the holy river, watching the villagers go about their life without knowing how special (even if poverty stricken) it is. In that moment I easily could have left everything here in the states for that rusty bicycle in that old village in the jungle.

Tell us all about your bikes

I have had many bikes over the years. My favorite, a light purple vintage Schwinn road bike with original gears named Fernando, was stolen a couple of years ago. Right now I am riding a cherry red vintage Takara that makes all the bikers in Dallas jealous for some reason. This bike is named Fabregas (I name my bikes after Barcelona futbol players) and was custom rebuilt for me by an after school program in Dallas called Mercy Street. It is awesome to still be able to go out to west Dallas and ride the levees with the kids that built this bike for me.

What’s your name and location?
Karly Coleman, Edmonton, Alberta Canada

What type of cycling do you enjoy?
commuting, touring, winter cycling

What is your first cycling memory?
Learning to ride by using a vegetable canner as a mounting block. I would ride around and around our yard, fall off, run back to get the canner, take it back to the bike… it was only years later as an adult I realized it would have been easier to take the bike to the canner!

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?
The way I feel when I ride inspires me, because it is so glorious and I can get so many places

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?
zooming around, staying upright and off the ice, and bicycle traffic reporting

Tell us all about your bikes
My everyday ride is a Mountain Equipment Coop Hold Steady. I also have a Brompton folder, a Pashley Princess Sovereign, an Electra, a Kuwahara Super Tour, a unicycle, and a mountain bike of some indeterminate age. My beloved and I also have a Belinky Viewpoint tandem.

Motivational Monday Jen

What’s your name and location?

Jen Charrette

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Everything, but mountain biking is my passion.

What is your first cycling memory?

It was my first big outing with my parents. I was maybe 8 and we were riding on a highway overpass and I fell off the sidewalk and into the lane of traffic. I was okay but banged up. My parents took my over to get ice cream and all was good.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

Most of my motivation to ride comes internally. I love the sport and the way it makes me feel. But I have to say that as a Mom of a 6 year old that is obsessed with riding he nudges me when needed.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

I just got back from a week in Tucson getting in some base road miles. It was in the 70s and I got 200 miles in… so it is looking like a great year for biking.

Motivational Monday Kathy

What’s your name and location?

Kathy in Philadelphia, PA

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

road, mountain bike, would like to try cyclocross

What is your first cycling memory?

Riding around and around and around the driveway with my sister on our first big wheels (or so the photos recall, I must have been about 2 or 3). I do concretely remember my first 10 speed, it was grey and pink of course. There may have been tassles but I choose to block that part out, definitely had those fluorescent spoke blings that would make all kinds of noise when I rode.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My husband who’s gently but steadily encouraged me to ride with a healthy bit of tough love, but mostly me for riding through some challenging life events, and the mental release I feel when I’m riding. Also, watching bad ass cyclocross ladies compete, because they like hilly courses and dirt.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Riding my first 2 day total 160 or so mile ride after a summer of health issues that kept interrupting my training plans. It didn’t hurt that it was a ride for MS with total strangers cheering me on at the finish as if I wasn’t already getting a little emotional.

Tell us all about your bikes

Cannondale Caad 4 S1000 with a sweet limited edition red, orange and black fade paint job (a tad too big for me but has served me quite well)

2011 Specialized Stumpjumper 29er (my new and first mtb bought as a bike shop demo sell off on which you will find me smiling and laughing on the Wissahickon trail loving this new ride) and also pennies being saved for a Specialized Ruby (or other ultimate road bike I will find to lust after)

I’ve known Sue and her husband for a few years now. It has been very exciting to see her grow and push her comfort zone in cycling. Now as an avid time trialist on a Cervelo S1 that I had the fortune of assisting her purchase and original fitting now two years ago. You’ll find Sue and her husband at the local time trial series at the local NASCAR speedway, traveling to regional rides as well and even competing in the National Senior Games cycling time trial!

What’s your name and location?

Sue at Charlotte, NC

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Road (and time trials)

What is your first cycling memory?

Riding my little red tricycle down the very small hill in the driveway and having to push it back up the hill so I could ride down again.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

No one in particular. Ride because I feel so much better on the bike (after I have warmed up) and after the ride–do it for the uplift.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Riding the Blue Ridge looking at the foliage and not even worrying about the hills

Tell us all about your bikes

Only one bike I ride much at all, a Cervelo. Have a beater Trek that is saved for “just in case,” and an old hardtail mountain bike that very rarely gets out of the garage

Motivational Monday, a Monday tradition at Bike Shop Girl, my goal to keep you motivated and to be striving on the bike even during a hard week or long hours at work. Are you a woman that bicycles? Fill out this easy form and be part of our motivational movement!

Milliegoat

What is your name and location?

My name is Millie Tanner and my nickname is Milliegoat because I am good at climbing hills, mountains, overpasses, you name it! I live in warm Southern California.

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

I race road and cyclocross and I absolutely love both. Road is fun and tactical and cyclocross you get to race in the mud.

What is your first cycling memory?

That is a tough question! I think my first cycling memory is actually of crashing. I came around a u-turn and hit a curb when I was about 7 or 8 and on my road bike. I then proceeded to yell “ It jumped up and bit me!!” Ahh, good times!

Who in the cycling community inspires you and why?

I am inspired by many people in the cycling community. One person is Pam Sayler because she is always happy and you always will see a smile on her face! Chris Horner is another person who inspires me, because even at the age of 39 he won the Amgen Tour of California, and always seems to put his best foot forward. Another person is Jens Voigt, he has such a great work ethic and he is super funny too. The whole women’s peloton inspires me because they put their best foot foward, kick butt and have a good time. And last but certainly not least, my parents inspire me too. They always are helping out , working hard and being the best parents ever.

What has been your best moment on a bike in 2011?

I think my best moment on a bike in 2011 was placing second at the USACycling National Championships. I rode a really great time trial and I wanted to win so bad. As I came across the line I had the fastest time. I had the national championship for the next 29 seconds and then another girl came across the line beating my by 1 second.

In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2012?

Milliegoat

In the next year I really want to win a national championship and all the state championships. I have won state championships before so I think it is finally time to go and win that national championship.

About my bikes

I have a Fuji Supreme 1.0, a Specialized Langster track bike for the trainer and a Fuji concept frame for a TT bike.
