Driving Retail Success: Transitioning from Summer to Fall

As Summer winds down you should still have Summer Soft Goods displayed.

Even though it’s still hot outside, your fall apparel is arriving. Now is the time to get the fall apparel on those new wood hangers, get your customers thinking about Fall riding and staying warm doing it. Create a focal point that shows off the new Fall styles. You can use your entrance flat table area to start the process. Dress up a ¾ torso mannequin in Fall styles, display warm gloves, socks, and long sleeve jerseys or jackets. You can do any number of display renderings in multiple areas to send the message it’s time to start thinking Fall apparel. It’s also time to start filling your floor fixtures with warmers, long finger gloves, warm socks, booties, and head wear.

Here are two basic examples of a Fall flat table display, and an accessory cart with warmers, head wear, and booties ready for Fall.

Driving Retail Success: Staff Apparel

Store owners that use printed custom shop shirts for the staff to wear, can also promote your brand. Custom shop apparel helps you to run a more organized business. Custom shop shirts not only further promotes your brand, it tells your customer here is a member of my staff that can help them. My vote is (as a customer) I would prefer to locate someone that clearly wears a shop shirt. Make sure you bring in a comfortable shirt so it stays on the staff member, and also make sure it’s available in a women’s specific design. Women prefer their own genders apparel.

August Challenge: 1,000 Commuter Miles

4 Bike Commuting

Last week I wrote about the bike commute into my new job at Pearl Izumi. After nailing down my inbound and outbound routes it takes between 1.5 – 2 hours each way. This is going pretty easy and really only attacking on the way home to get home faster!

Fast forward to this week, I drove in the first couple days this week and became more frustrated as I sat in traffic 45 minutes each way. I also learned about a pretty cool challenge going on by LiveWell Colorado called Colorado Get Moving Challenge. The challenge is to make Colorado the most active state by having folks commit to 30 minutes of exercise every day in August.

All of this got my wheels turning…I need base miles for cyclocross, I need to be on my bike, I hate sitting in traffic and I would love to commit to this challenge. With the encouragement (and reality check from my better half) I checked myself thinking I would commute all 22 work days of August and decided committing to 1,000 commuting miles in August is more reasonable. This allows me to drive one day a week to bring food and clean clothes in/out of the office and 3 days of recovery.

Along this process I’ve also become an ambassador of the Get Moving Challenge. You’ll see my tags #COgetmovin on Twitter and Instagram, and my fitness updates on MapMyFitness. Every few days I may do a mental download here on things I’m learning, food I’m eating and adventures I’m having by putting in roughly 240 commuter miles a week. I may not be very social this month during the week, and if you see me I’ll probably always have food and water in hand!

Driving Retail Success: Store Atmosphere Part 1: Take The Sniff Test

Having unpleasant odors, is one of the quickest ways to get your customers to leave your store. So what can you do, and how do you know if your store smells?

Here are a  few things to consider to keep your store odors in check.

  • Check in with your some of your better customers ask them if your store smells, if you get a yes you need to address it now!
  • The ideal smell is a scent that is just under your perception, consider using a aroma service to get it right.
  • Rubber is part of the cycling industry, however the smell can overpower a stores atmosphere. Try keeping the bulk of your repair and replacement rubber out of the retail area.
  • If you sell wetsuits, try using an auto air-freshener hung right with the wetsuits.
  • Keep personal food items off the selling floor and put the waste in the trash outside as soon as possible.
  • Vacuum your floor and dust on regular basis, make sure the bag in the vacuum is changed regularly.
  • Take the sniff test on a regular basis, if you have a female staff member use her for the test. I have been told that women can detect smells better the men.

Dialing in a New Bike Commute to Louisville, Colorado

It’s been two and a half weeks of work at the new job and pretty early on it was apparent that I need to do something with this 45 minute car commute each direction. Between the time spent staring at cars and mountains ahead of me, the miles on the car and the gas being wasted a bike commute plan needed to be made ASAP.

Last Tuesday I rode into the office at Pearl Izumi for the first time. Roughly 28 miles each direction (an extra 5 on the way home after getting lost) added up to a solid day of riding but broken down into two bite size segments so my legs weren’t toasted when I woke up the next morning. There is a perfect mix of greenways (paved and gravel), road riding and dirt roads to keep everything interesting. The sights are gorgeous thanks to in the morning riding towards the mountain and then riding through “open space” with animals all around. I’ve already seen cows, foxes, prairie dogs and a ton of cool looking birds. Also, I’ve already wiped out on the greenway due to some construction and really soft sand being thrown across some gravel. Don’t worry, the bikes okay.

I’m scheming up a rather lofty goal for August when it comes to bike commuting, it will mean random commuting rants on here, a lot of great gear reviews and all of you keeping me motivated but look for a full disclosure of this crazy plan come early next week.

Driving Retail Success: Keeping your soft goods areas looking new

Summer is the best selling time for most of the country, and the last thing you want to do is change things around. However if don’t keep your store looking new the customers who frequently visit won’t see your inventory, because they think it looks the same as always. Here are a few things you can do to keep your soft goods areas looking new.

• Rotate your floor fixtures 180 degrees.
• Flip your color stories around.
• Change your mannequins apparel.
• Add some variety to your anchor wall by adding shelves and hangrails.
• Switch out your props on the floor fixtures and anchor wall.
• If you double display some items rotate those displays.
• Change the foliage to reflect the season.

Laying my Cards on the Table

I’ve been known to pour my heart out on various blogs. If it’s falling in love, falling out of love, or even the moments after my car/bike accident a few years ago. I dealt by writing and wearing my heart on my sleeve. Here’s to having feelings, grabbing a beer and putting it all out there for my own reference but also for my readers to know where things sit these days.

About a month ago I moved to Denver, Colorado. There was a lot of excitement of this new chapter in my life, with an amazing girl, but also a lot of fear. I’ve always lived on the east coast, I had a strong tribe in the southeast and I was finally finding my way racing again. The move was rather sudden (less than 60 days to prep) so things were a bit shaky as we landed.

When we moved I started working pretty quickly at a bike shop, Salvagetti. Within a couple weeks I knew this wasn’t where I belonged. Working retail hours, retail wages, trying to get in time to ride and time to live life with the girl I moved for…well it simply wasn’t doable. Bowing out gracefully, I still hope to spend time with the shop helping with events and on bike fun things.

A new page in this new chapter

This past week I started in a new job at Pearl Izumi. I’ll be working within the custom department in sales and customer service. This department is growing with leaps and bounds, leaving me very excited to be apart of the growth and excitement!

The new job has shifted many things for me. First off, I have off weekends again which allows for adventures with Emily and friends. Empower Adventure is my blog documenting this (and every day adventures too!) Second, I hope to get base miles back in over the next few weeks by commuting 2x per week (60 miles a day) to hopefully get my legs back in order by mid August to start cyclocross prep! Finally, this change to working for a powerhouse in the biking apparel world, and that Pearl Izumi is owned by Shimano… well things on Bike Shop Girl will be shifted a bit. The content I review won’t be too much around apparel, unless I get something from work that I really like and want to share with you. The stock pile of review apparel I’ve been testing out will be reviewed with the honest opinion I have always given but once the pile is gone, I won’t be accepting anything new.

Where Life Leads

While I still am finding my footing in a new Monday to Friday job, I’m excited to finding myself on the bike more often, meeting new friends and documenting new adventures. Is it cyclocross season yet?

Everyday Cycling Clothing

Our poll last week to answer the question “Do You Wear Cycling Clothing” had a great response and one of the common questions were what can I wear if I don’t want to be caught dead outside in skin tight spandex?  There are many clothing options out these days that aren’t skin tight and do a great job of keeping you dry and comfortable but styling.

Many people are familiar with the brand Under Armour, or before that Adidas and Nike had a great following for “technical clothing.”  This was clothing that wicked away your sweat but breathed well.   There are some technical shirts geared towards riding which have a lower cut back for when you bend over so you aren’t exposing anything and built in basic pockets to hold a gel or key.  Budget between $35 – 70 for a good wicking shirt.  Be prepared that polyester is a key make up of these shirts and can trap stink.

A couple of my favorites include the Aurora T (pictured right) from Pearl Izumi for around $35.  Also, one that I plan on picking up for the fall is the Sugoi Crossroads Henley.  Perfect for fall riding, grocery trip hauling or mountain biking when it is chilly.
