What’s your name and location?

Lisa Cramton, recent transplant to Phoenix via Laguna Beach, CA and Crested Butte, CO all within the last 11 months!

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

All kinds, but if I had to pick one…. My Niner Air 9 Carbon SingleSpeed. What doesn’t kill you makes you faster!

What is your first cycling memory?

Riding my bike around the block singing at the top of my lungs (in the deepest gravely voice I could find) “Jeremiah was a bullfrog… Was a good friend of mine…” I wish I had that on film.

Who in the current cycling industry inspires you, and better yet WHY?

SO MANY!! Without a doubt, a man I have known for 20+ yrs, Dave Wiens because of his humility, love of the sport and dedication to getting more people involved. He’s the man!! Doug Bradbury,father of mtn bike suspension, for most of the same reasons! The folks at the back of the pack always inspire me. The peeps out on the Tour Divide, I can’t stop watching!! Check it out here, isn’t it OBVIOUS?? Ned O, will he ever quit racing? I hope not!! Pro rider Jenny Smith, she gives back so much… Any pro that goes to a trail work day… I could go on…

What was your best moment on a bike in 2010?

Either SS Worlds in New Zealand (pic) or my last ride in Crested Butte before we moved to LA, Reno Flag Bear Deadmans, one of the best rides in the universe. I cried most of the way… I miss the riding there SO MUCH!!

In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2011? RIDE MORE… Hmm… There are a few goals I have… Because we have moved 3x in the past year I have gotten out of volunteering for trail work, I spent a summer working on the IMBA Trail Care Crew and LOVE diggin’ in the dirt! Being in the industry and pushing the drug we call cycling, I think it’s pretty important to give back whether it’s by volunteering at an event, course marshaling at a race,, doing trail work, taking kids riding, whatever you can find to give back, DO IT!
I also want to find a way to do customer service clinics at shops, especially for women. Show women that they can be comfortable helping guys in bike shops, that they know how to answer the technical questions, show them how to approach/talk to “dudes”. The ladies don’t have to be there just to clean the bathrooms, sell bike tubes and tidy the clothing section! I found working at crankbrothers that people have a tendency to be super defensive when asking questions or talking about warranty stuff, especially to a woman and it doesn’t have to be that way. I also want to go into shops and show the shop rats that they will get much better results calling the bike vendors not ready to rumble! The bike companies want to help you not bum you out. AND…! JRA is NOT covered under warranty, ’cause there’s always more to the story!!

I JUST sold a GF SS Superfly as well as a geared one (I never rode it other then La Ruta ’08), I have a Niner SIR frame I want to build up 1×9, a Niner Air 9 Carbon SS (my main squeeze), an older Lemond road bike, a Felt Breed SS CX (makes for an excellent commuter), an Electra 3sp tandem with flames on the fenders for dates, my first road bike (’85?) a Raleigh Racing Comp, a 60′s era Schwinn Typhoon and an old skip tooth Firestone Pilot with a ’54 Gunnison bike plate on it!

What’s your name and location?

Tammy Sadle, Boulder, Colorado

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

You know, the ‘wind in the hair’ types…crusin’, road, and mountain

What is your first cycling memory?

Me and my little sister, Kim, riding bikes in our community growing up. We had just watched The Muppet Movie and were trying to recreate the scene where Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy were riding figure eights on bikes while singing. Let’s just say there was a minor collision and lots of laughter involved!

Who in the current cycling industry inspires you, and better yet WHY?

Organizations such as First Descents (who I’ll be fundraising and racing the Leadville 100 for) and other Colorado based health promoting non-profits/charities have provided me with the ‘WHY?‘ I needed to immerse myself back into competitive cycling. I had started to find bike racing to be a quite self-promoting sport and no longer knew how it fit into my broader life goals, until I signed up for LV100 with First Descents (they had 20 available spots for people willing to raise at least $3,000 before the start of the race). Suddenly I had purpose and desire beyond myself and was instantly enamored with the good vibes and happy faces of the entire mountain biking community. More specifically, my coach, Daniel Matheny (Carmichael Training Systems/Honey Stinger pro), is a big inspiration because he has been able to translate my ‘turbo’ and overachieving mentality (which often leads to burn out and disappointment) into goals, structure and lifestyle that are FUN, sustainable and low stress but not without challenge. Of course, the women of mountain biking (especially those with mad descending skills), and who represent and give back to their community, inspire me to be a positive example.

What was your best moment on a bike in 2010?

Racing with Jeanie Longo at Steamboat Stage Race and hearing her tell me to ‘Go! Go!’ in her cute French accent. She is amazing!

In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2011?

To become more involved with local health promoting groups (especially with young girls/women) through volunteering (Valmont Bike Park, Colorado High School League, and others) and to continue to be true to myself…doing what feels good and makes me smile. Oh, I do have a list of skills I’d love to master which include learning to do a wheelie and some bike mechanics.

I purchased a 2010 Scott Spark Contessa which is totally tricked out with the best, hand picked parts. I take no credit for this, but am fully enjoying it and believe that to a large degree…it IS about the bike! You gotta find a bike that fits you well, is dependable and lightweight. Don’t wait to become a cyclist, the right bike and gear can help with this! I also have a Cannondale CAAD-9 road bike with a Powertap to do structured power-based training and a fixed-gear road bike for fun.

I am very excited about this weeks Motivational Monday.  It took some prodding, and she may have been clueless of why she was answering the questions but I bring you the person I refer to often as my better half.  Kimberlee Welsand.  She personally keeps me motivated, and inspired daily.  I can easily say without her this past fall after my accident – there would be no bike shop girl. I would have become someone else, but not a cyclist.  One of my larger goals for 2011 is to get her back on the bike as often as possible following a horrible ankle/foot trauma.

Road, I’m learning MTB but have a love/hate relationship with it that needs to be smoothed out.

Started seasonal road riding in the summer of 2005.

Arleigh because she makes me get on the bike.

In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2011?

My goal in the year of 2011 is to actually get onto the bike outside again. I had recently recuperated from an ankle injury that prevented the fitness aspect of my life.

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Think of a foot wide trail with rocks, the smell of pine, wildflowers, and views of mountains. I love mountain biking at its core, especially when it involves alpine singletrack in the summer!

What is your first cycling memory?

My first memory on a bike was riding without training wheels. I used to have this little purple bike with a white banana seat with a handle. My dad would hold on to the handle behind the saddle and run behind me. One day I looked back and saw that he wasn’t holding on and I was riding all on my own without training wheels. I shortly crashed. :) My dad told me he would let go and watch me ride all the time!

My first memory mountain biking is getting dropped by some guy I was dating when I was 19(it was my first time mountain biking, and it was on my brother’s middle school mountain bike) because we were riding with this other girl that was a racer and he left me alone on the trail to go ride with her… and shortly dumped me thereafter. haha

Who in the current cycling industry inspires you, and better yet WHY?

There are so many people that I find inspiring for different reasons. From people who have a laundry list of amazing accomplishments to the guy who comes in last place at a 100 mile race(to stay out there and finish takes a great deal of will and that is inspiring to me.) At the moment, my teammate Jeff Kerkove has been inspiring me the most. He isn’t afraid of adventures that sound scary on a bike, and the adventures are life changing experiences. They are things that sound so hard that I say, “There is noooo way I’d want to do that” and sure enough, within a year I find myself doing it. This year’s Jeff Kerkove inspired “there’s no way I would do that” adventure is the Colorado Trail Race that starts August 1.

Sure, people with titles like “world champ” or “national champ” inspire me to some degree. However, I am more inspired by people who do so much more than just ride a bike blazing fast. People who want to help other people, people like my friend Nina Baum who spends a lot of time mentoring junior racers, people who work full time with families and still find a way to race their bike and have a total blast, people who do it for the love of pedaling. To me, that is a lot more inspiring than a white jersey with rainbow stripes although I greatly understand and appreciate the sacrifices and talent that go into earning on of those (something I’ll never have)

What was your best moment on a bike in 2010?

That’s so tough to pinpoint. 2010 has been the best year I’ve had on my bike and it’ll be hard to top it. There are many moments that meant a lot to me. I got to race world championships (although I was very disappointed with the almost all dirt road course), I got to race my bike in Brasil, I won a stage race in one of my favorite towns with one of my favorite people (Breck Epic). There were so many other moments that were special as well for various reasons, so I can’t really pick one best moment.

I can say that in 2010, I felt like I achieved all my goals in cycling and then some. I felt like all my hard work culminated into something I never imagined and even today I pinch myself almost daily saying, “How did this happen?!” The tricky part is making new goals, and figuring out what’s reasonable!

In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2011?

My main goal for 2011 is the finish the Colorado Trail Race. It’ll be by far the hardest thing I’ve done in my life, and I’ve done some tough things both on and off the bike! It’s a 500 mile SOLO race, self supported, self navigated… on the Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango. I’ll be in the woods by myself carrying everything I need to survive. Luck is a factor, but preparation is HUGE. Getting to Durango will be the biggest accomplishment in my cycling career apart of making the Worlds team twice! This race is very different because it’s not about racing really… it’s about adventure, an iron will, self reliance, and I know I’m going to learn so much more about myself that I never knew was there. Struggles are when we grow and this will surely be a struggle.

Wanna Know About my Bikes?

I ride a Cannondale Supersix road bike with a flat bar and Ergon GX2 grips(yessss), a Canyon Lux MR full suspension bike, and a Canyon Grand Canyon CF hardtail. All fantastic bikes. I raced some cross last year, but I had to give the bike back to the team. I really want to add a cross bike and a 29er to my quiver!

Turn That Light On, Even in the Day

There are reasons that daytime running lights have become standard on many cars, they add safety.   It would be obvious to cyclist to add this extra level of safety to their daily bike rides, even during the daylight.

A Customer’s Story

Two years ago a good customer of the bike shop I was managing was literally run over by a car.  She was on a quiet road during the mid day, with 4 open lanes around her.  The customer is now healthy and able to bike again, but it was a touch and go case.  The owner of the bike shop kept the fork off her run over bike in reminder of the actions we take when riding our bike.  The driver of the car had a pretty standard reply,  “I didn’t even see the person!”  The cyclist was in a very shady part of the road and even though it was sunny out, she was camouflaged by her surroundings.

As a cyclist and a driver I know this can sometimes be the case.  When lighting is bad, clothing is dark and the cyclist blends into the scenery.  With so many other distractions for drivers to checking in on, phone, radio or the screaming baby in the back, I push everyone to give them better time to see you.

Brighter clothing and not riding in the gutter can help this. My big push to every person I’ve ever sold a bike to that is going to be ridden on the road is a light.  Buying batteries once a month is much cheaper than your life, and with most lights viewable 2,000+ feet behind I’ll take it.Cateye Light

Several people chimed in on our Facebook and Twitter accounts to answer the question about riding with their blinky light on during the day.

Tawny Yambrovich I see other cyclists do it in daylight and it is virtually invisible; therefore it is a waste of batteries, and a waste of resources (reducing your use of batteries means fewer in landfills or needing recycling).

Tawny, I agree with you that normally a light isn’t viewable but in that one low light situation I would rather be wasting a bit more than wasting my life.

Josh Lipton Something really bright like the Planet Bike SuperFlash on flash mode is bright enough to easily catch people’s eyes even in broad daylight. I figure the sooner other road users see you, the better.

Amen.   Give motorist a heads up that you are riding, most people aren’t used to riding around cyclist and they need prepared.

What are the biggest marketing motives in 2011? Or.. what are some motivating factors for Terry Bicycles in 2011?

1. Get more women riding.
We aim to do this through innovative new social media efforts, expansion of our product line and increasing our involvement in event sponsorship like the Wild Goose Chase, Little Red Riding Hood, MS150 and other benefit rides.

2. Revitalize the Terry brand.
We’re introducing a new identity complete with tagline: the original women’s bicycling company; a new approach to catalog merchandising that focuses on cycling themes; full custom apparel prints that are modern and fashion forward; new saddle graphics across the entire saddle line; expanded line of bicycles in steel and aluminum at the widest variety of price points we’ve had in years.

3. Expand our customer communications.

Out of the Box Thoughts

The look of Knog lights have always been a clean, catchy, subtle design. The question has always been the quality and longetivity of the light. These new Blinder Road Lights seem to have a bit more to them, first in the band which is much thicker than their other lights, and then second are the cords they are finally shipping with their USB charging lights. You struggle any longer trying to plug one of their lights into the back of your computer or keyboard thanks to this long USB extender.

Only time will tell how the lights hold up, and how long they really do keep their charge. Give me a couple weeks to push the test of these little lights! Learn more over at Knog.

Thoughts and Opinion

I’ve reviewed many lights on Bike Shop Girl and Commute By Bike. One thing or another happens after a few months of constant use. Mounts break, lenses fall out, water damage or the battery stops holding a charge (especially in the cold.)

After a year of constant use (day and night) on one bike or another, using the Urban 200 during a couple nights of camping, I can happily say I want this set of lights on all my bikes.

Mountain bike night rides

I am planning to do some mountain bike racing this spring and thus have been trying to get some extra miles on my mountain bike.  Living in the middle of Atlanta makes this difficult, especially during the week.  Luckily I’ve discovered a local Tuesday night no-drop trail ride.  I’ve ridden this ride a couple times recently and am pretty happy about the added miles that I’m getting without having to go too far or change my schedule too much.

I would like to say that when I first started riding a mountain bike, I thought that only insanity and a love of medical bills would cause someone to try this in the dark.  It was a challenge for me to make it through an entire ride in full sunshine, so why would someone make it harder by limiting what they can see?  As I’ve ridden more and mountain biking has become more intuitive for me, I’ve figured out why some cyclists choose to ride at night.  Night rides are great because:

  1. Winter days are short and dark.  Night rides provide the opportunity for mountain bike fun despite the short days.  Just make sure to bundle up, because the temperature gets colder the later into the night you ride.
  2. In the summer, when daytime temperatures are unbearable, riding at night decreases your chances of being disgustingly sweaty and getting  sunburned, thus increasing your chances of actually enjoying the ride.
  3. Weekends fill up quickly and 9-to-5 jobs leave little time for day time rides.  Night rides fit nicely into a busy schedule.  (I do get a little less sleep on night-ride nights.  I guess something has to give.)
  4. It’s a new challenge.  With just ambient light and a headlight to guide you, your brain has to adjust it’s depth perception and you have to react to the trail more quickly.  It requires you to step up your game.
  5. It’s fun to roam around in the dark woods.  It feels a little like being a high school hooligan (yep, I said hooligan), a little mischievous.
  6. (Don’t tell anyone that I said this, but it gives you the opportunity to ride trails that you might not be able to ride during the day–trails labeled “No bikes” or some private property trails.  Sshhhh…that’s a secret…I’m not saying it actually happens.  I’m just saying that it could hypothetically happen.)

I still consider myself a night-ride beginner, but every time I finish the Faster Mustache Tuesday night ride, I come home with new advice for myself, so I thought I might share some of that with those of you thinking about trying it.

  1. Plan ahead– I was planning on a night ride a couple weeks ago and got home to discover that I had forgotten to charge my headlight battery.  No light, no ride.  No plan, no ride.
  2. Be prepared–During a recent night ride I broke my derailleur hanger.  Luckily someone else had come prepared with zip ties and a chain breaker.  Otherwise, I would have had to walk the several miles home.  You should be fully prepared for every ride you go on, but the risk of walking home/back to the car in the dark and late at night underscores the importance of preparedness.
  3. Double check that your light is fully charged–Having ridden with a dying light before, I can tell you that it’s not fun.  Riding at night is already a challenge.  Not having a light makes it just plain dangerous.  Charge your light and if you think that your ride might outlast your light, bring an extra one.  I ride with the Niterider MiNewt Pro 750.  My night rides are about 3 hours and it hasn’t failed me yet.
  4. Know the trail or ride with a friend who knows the trail (and is the same speed as you)–I’m new to the in-town Atlanta night ride.  The other cyclists have generally ridden these trails hundreds of times or are pretty quick and can keep up with those who are familiar with the trails.  I am neither familiar or quick enough to keep up with the group (only girl on the ride usually…).  This makes for some frustrating moments sometimes.  I often get to trail intersections and have no idea which way to go.  I’ve discovered that I’m pretty good at either picking the wrong direction or not seeing the turn at all.  One of the guys usually comes to track me down or makes loud enough noises so that I can find my way back to the group.  I try to laugh about my adventures alone in the dark, but it can be frustrating.  That said, if you’re going to ride at night, pick a trail that you know pretty well or make sure your riding companions will ride at your pace or come find you when you get lost.
  5. Don’t give up after the first time–Night riding is hard.  Your brain will have to adjust its depth perception skills.  You can’t see as far ahead as you can in the daylight, so you have to react to the trail more quickly.  You might get lost at some point.  Don’t let those things convince you not to try it again.  Give it another shot.  It gets easier and more fun, I promise.
  6. Find a local late-night eatery–You know how hungry you are after every mountain bike ride? Night rides are no exception, so know where the closest late-night joint is located.  We always end our ride at a local pizza place and when we roll up at 11 pm, we’re always the last people in there.  A beer and some slices make the perfect midnight snack before we all split up to head home and go to bed.
