it’s my first year living in Colorado for cyclocross and I’m starting to get excited! The calendar on BRAC (Bicycle Racing Association Colorado) is lacking links and non-sanctioned races/clinics so in my effort of research, here is what I have found for cyclocross racing in Colorado.

August Challenge: 1,000 Commuter Miles

Last week I wrote about the bike commute into my new job at Pearl Izumi. After nailing down my inbound and outbound routes it takes between 1.5 – 2 hours each way. This is going pretty easy and really only attacking on the way home to get home faster!

Fast forward to this week, I drove in the first couple days this week and became more frustrated as I sat in traffic 45 minutes each way. I also learned about a pretty cool challenge going on by LiveWell Colorado called Colorado Get Moving Challenge. The challenge is to make Colorado the most active state by having folks commit to 30 minutes of exercise every day in August.

All of this got my wheels turning…I need base miles for cyclocross, I need to be on my bike, I hate sitting in traffic and I would love to commit to this challenge. With the encouragement (and reality check from my better half) I checked myself thinking I would commute all 22 work days of August and decided committing to 1,000 commuting miles in August is more reasonable. This allows me to drive one day a week to bring food and clean clothes in/out of the office and 3 days of recovery.

Along this process I’ve also become an ambassador of the Get Moving Challenge. You’ll see my tags #COgetmovin on Twitter and Instagram, and my fitness updates on MapMyFitness. Every few days I may do a mental download here on things I’m learning, food I’m eating and adventures I’m having by putting in roughly 240 commuter miles a week. I may not be very social this month during the week, and if you see me I’ll probably always have food and water in hand!

Driving Retail Success: Store Atmosphere Part 1: Take The Sniff Test

Having unpleasant odors, is one of the quickest ways to get your customers to leave your store. So what can you do, and how do you know if your store smells?

Here are a  few things to consider to keep your store odors in check.

  • Check in with your some of your better customers ask them if your store smells, if you get a yes you need to address it now!
  • The ideal smell is a scent that is just under your perception, consider using a aroma service to get it right.
  • Rubber is part of the cycling industry, however the smell can overpower a stores atmosphere. Try keeping the bulk of your repair and replacement rubber out of the retail area.
  • If you sell wetsuits, try using an auto air-freshener hung right with the wetsuits.
  • Keep personal food items off the selling floor and put the waste in the trash outside as soon as possible.
  • Vacuum your floor and dust on regular basis, make sure the bag in the vacuum is changed regularly.
  • Take the sniff test on a regular basis, if you have a female staff member use her for the test. I have been told that women can detect smells better the men.

Dialing in a New Bike Commute to Louisville, Colorado

It’s been two and a half weeks of work at the new job and pretty early on it was apparent that I need to do something with this 45 minute car commute each direction. Between the time spent staring at cars and mountains ahead of me, the miles on the car and the gas being wasted a bike commute plan needed to be made ASAP.

Last Tuesday I rode into the office at Pearl Izumi for the first time. Roughly 28 miles each direction (an extra 5 on the way home after getting lost) added up to a solid day of riding but broken down into two bite size segments so my legs weren’t toasted when I woke up the next morning. There is a perfect mix of greenways (paved and gravel), road riding and dirt roads to keep everything interesting. The sights are gorgeous thanks to in the morning riding towards the mountain and then riding through “open space” with animals all around. I’ve already seen cows, foxes, prairie dogs and a ton of cool looking birds. Also, I’ve already wiped out on the greenway due to some construction and really soft sand being thrown across some gravel. Don’t worry, the bikes okay.

I’m scheming up a rather lofty goal for August when it comes to bike commuting, it will mean random commuting rants on here, a lot of great gear reviews and all of you keeping me motivated but look for a full disclosure of this crazy plan come early next week.

Driving Retail Success: Keeping your soft goods areas looking new

Summer is the best selling time for most of the country, and the last thing you want to do is change things around. However if don’t keep your store looking new the customers who frequently visit won’t see your inventory, because they think it looks the same as always. Here are a few things you can do to keep your soft goods areas looking new.

• Rotate your floor fixtures 180 degrees.
• Flip your color stories around.
• Change your mannequins apparel.
• Add some variety to your anchor wall by adding shelves and hangrails.
• Switch out your props on the floor fixtures and anchor wall.
• If you double display some items rotate those displays.
• Change the foliage to reflect the season.

The League of American Bicyclists sent out the blurb below about bicycle rider equality.

Bicycling has more than doubled from 1.7 billion trips in 2001 to more than four billion trips in 2009 — and youth, women, and communities of color are playing a key role in shifting transportation demand towards safe, accessible, and equitable bicycling for all. A new report from the League and the Sierra Club, “The New Majority: Pedaling Towards Equity,” showcases analysis and data on the changing face and new leadership in the bike movement nationwide, as well as key challenges and opportunities to advance equity moving forward.

The past decade has seen dramatic growth in biking, with the total number of trips more than doubling from 1.7 billion in 2001 to 4 billion in 2009, according to the National Household Travel Survey.Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, Bike to Work Day will be celebrated in hundreds of communities nationwide on Friday, May 17, highlighting the health, economic and community benefits of bicycling with local commuter convoys, energizer stations, breakfast rallies and more.

Where has bike commuting grown the most? In Bicycle Friendly Communities(BFC) that have made smart, strategic investments to make biking better.From 2000 to 2011, the bicycle commuting rate has risen 80% in the largest Bicycle Friendly Communities — far above the average growth of 47% nationwide and more than double the rate of 32% in the cities not designated as bicycle-friendly.
In fact, in many Bicycle Friendly Communities, including Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Denver and Lexington, Ky., the rate of bike commuting has more than doubled since 2000.

“I see the dramatic increase in ridership on my own daily bike commute,” said League President Andy Clarke. “And it’s definitely more pronounced in those communities — like Arlington County and the District of Columbia — that are proactively improving conditions for bicycling and following the Bicycle Friendly Community blueprint.”

Musings on Active & Recovery Nutrition

3 Ice Cream Ride

There are many schools of thoughts in the athletic world about what you should or shouldn’t eat. Many of my friends have gone with the Paleo eating habits, personally I try to look at the ingredients, make an educated “Yes or No” thought in my head and then try it on training rides. These days it takes a scientist to breakdown and to be able to explain what all the moving parts are doing in many “sports food”. For ease of use I’ve always been a fan of the “systems” that have a during and an after just so I don’t have to think too heavy.

These musings are due to a press release from Osmo Nutrition that Cannondale Pro team picked Osmo for their Pre, Active and Recovery hydration.

After the brutally hot first two stages of ATOC, Cannondale Pro Cycling turned to Osmo’s leading science and proven performance, with Sagan and the team used Osmo PreLoad Hydration before stages, Osmo Active Hydration during the racing, and Osmo Acute Recovery after stages. The results have been immediate, with Sagan winning stage 3 and the final stage of the week-long race, bring his total stage count to ten.

At the end of a spectacular stage that began in San Francisco, crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, and headed north along the legendary California coast, Cannondale Pro Cycling wound up their Pro-Tour leadout train, delivery Sagan to a sprint finish. “The team got me in position and I went from 300 meters,” said Sagan immediately following his win in Santa Rosa. “I felt very strong. I hit 1,750 watts, more than I’m used to seeing. Osmo helped for sure.”

“Having Peter and Cannondale Pro Cycling win the final stage in Santa Rosa is truly special for Osmo,” said co-founder and chief scientist Stacy Sims. “Just one year ago we launched Osmo at the Amgen Tour
of California and today we gave the rider with the most stage wins in ATOC history the hydration and recovery edge he needed to take his 10th career victory at the race. This just speaks to the rapid
acceptance of Osmo’s products, all developed with peer-reviewed science.

While I realize a decent amount of this is media hype, it reminds me of the times I have used those gels at the perfect time for a last kick or how when I forget my recovery drink I wake up feeling hung over.

Nutrition is a very personal thing, depending on the level of your sports you would probably benefit working with a nutritionist to learn what you burn, what your body responds to and proper timing of it all.

Last night’s ride for ice cream and two quarts of strawberries reminded me that we can all be strict about eating, especially when we have a pair of jeans to fit in or upcoming race. We also need to enjoy the living and experience the joy that a simple (hilly) bike ride for an ice cream cone can give you!

I also have to mention one of my friends that has completed (strongly) many Ironman distance races is known for going to McDonald’s the night before for a large order of chicken nuggets. And good ole chocolate milk has always been my goto recovery drink.

As the move to Denver, CO gets closer, Emily and I are researching more and more about biking and outdoor activities. Becoming familiar with bike routes, day trips and places to explore will allow us to feel quickly at home and adding various levels of excitement for our next chapter.

Everyone knows how Colorado is an outdoorsman dream, especially a cyclist. The latest rankings of bike friendly states from the Bike League only shows this more!

Landing in 2nd place only behind Washington state. My current home of North Carolina is down in 28th place! I’m excited to see what it will be like to be in a little more “forward thinking” bike state.
