Why Should We Buy Local When It Isn’t Equal?

During the past month of mad scrambles to get presents and my new routine of walking the streets of Boulder, Colorado, past boutique’s and chains I have become jaded.

I believe my feelings changed around the time American Express started pushing “Small Business Saturday” the day after Black Friday several years ago. If you really are a small business owner, there is a chance you don’t even accept American Express because of the raised fee’s the card brings. Small Business Saturday should be sponsored by the US Treasury to promote the exchange of paper bills and metal coins, not plastic that costs the small business more margin (think 3% of the maybe 30% that the merchant may be netting.)

Back to my original thoughts.

I’m a proud gold card carrying Starbucks customer. Daily, I walk past many cute little coffee shops in Boulder, Colorado, on my way to the office in the morning. I have tried three over the past month, a couple of them numerous times, and it has been a 50/50 split of leaving with happiness. Maybe I have high expectations but to me a local business should deliver me an equal, or maybe even better, experience of the chain next store. I’ll happily pay a bit more for this. The coffee should taste equal or better, the atmosphere should be welcoming.

Here have been my experiences at these local coffee shops

  • My credit card was accidentally charged twice
  • My drink order was forgotten
  • The staff treated me like I didn’t belong (no smile, no exchange of pleasantries)
  • Twice, I have walked away with an amazing cup of coffee but all other times my Keurig produces equal quality

Get to the point

This venting is not to ridicule the local coffee houses of Boulder but to prove a point that buying local does not mean that you should be settling.

There have been many comments over the years when I link to JensonUSA or any online retailer to buy a product that I’m not showing love for local bike shops. While I have the softest place in my heart saved for local bike shops with out the name “Trek” or “Giant” in their name, I also have a higher level of standards for these shops. Being a local bike shop does not mean you have arrogance about you, your mechanics are too good for hybrids and your bathrooms reek. Being a local shop means you need to be better, work longer hours, and have higher standards. If you can’t deliver that, then I will take my money elsewhere and recommend for others to go somewhere I know they will be treated well like REI or JensonUSA.

As the world of consumerism changes, I don’t believe Amazon is the devil or the end of local businesses. I believe local businesses need to step up the service, the quality and they will be happily rewarded.

Driving Retail Success: Transitioning from Summer to Fall

As Summer winds down you should still have Summer Soft Goods displayed.

Even though it’s still hot outside, your fall apparel is arriving. Now is the time to get the fall apparel on those new wood hangers, get your customers thinking about Fall riding and staying warm doing it. Create a focal point that shows off the new Fall styles. You can use your entrance flat table area to start the process. Dress up a ¾ torso mannequin in Fall styles, display warm gloves, socks, and long sleeve jerseys or jackets. You can do any number of display renderings in multiple areas to send the message it’s time to start thinking Fall apparel. It’s also time to start filling your floor fixtures with warmers, long finger gloves, warm socks, booties, and head wear.

Here are two basic examples of a Fall flat table display, and an accessory cart with warmers, head wear, and booties ready for Fall.

Bike Share All Over the US

Last summer I was fortunate enough to witness Charlotte’s B-Cycle program launch and most recently I live in the town of Denver that embraces bike share with stations all over Denver proper, and Boulder having another large program 30 minutes up the road. While I haven’t been an avid user as I have too many bikes of my own (maybe I should start my own bike share?!) I know many people that have started bike commuting, or given up their car thanks to bike share.

People for Bikes have a great info-graphic worth sharing about the power of bike sharing in the U.S. this year.

Store owners that use printed custom shop shirts for the staff to wear, can also promote your brand. Custom shop apparel helps you to run a more organized business. Custom shop shirts not only further promotes your brand, it tells your customer here is a member of my staff that can help them. My vote is (as a customer) I would prefer to locate someone that clearly wears a shop shirt. Make sure you bring in a comfortable shirt so it stays on the staff member, and also make sure it’s available in a women’s specific design. Women prefer their own genders apparel.

5 Fundamentals of Riding Everyone Should Take Note Of

When I tell people I run a website with the goal to empower women in cycling they automatically hear “feminist.” This is as far from truth as you can get as I simply want more people on bikes, and realize that a huge opportunity is to empower women on two wheels.

Last week the Bike League released a report wrapping women’s cycling stats and misconceptions together. The report, Women on a Roll, is a great summary of the state of cycling but not just for women – for everyone. Anyone working to get more people on bikes could benefit from reading the stats and assumptions found in this report. Stripping the spandex and politics from getting more bikes on the road this report gives a great baseline for many shops and advocacy groups to build forward momentum off of.

Focus on the 5 C’s

Catchy, but effective. The 5 C’s will help increase ridership in all communities (and across most niches.)

Comfort
Convenience
Consumer Products
Confidence
Community

If brands, product managers, bike shop owners, and advocacy directors focused on the 5 C’s cycling will be headed in a positive direction.
