Things I am Thankful For

Currently I am on vacation with my family in Bozeman, Montana (if you live around here let me know and we can get coffee.) The post are limited, and the thinking of bicycles is rare. I’m doing my best to spend time with my family, meet new family and freeze my rear off in the snow.

Christmas is a great time to look back and be thankful for what you have and what you were able to achieve in the past year. I’m not a very religious person but the Christmas holiday always leaves me feeling very humbled and thankful for my life and loved ones.

My List of Thanks for Cycling

EM:PWR Cycling - a great group of cyclist coming together to get more people one bikes

The Memory of Jeff Papenfus – Jeff was an amazing figure in cycling in the Southeast, he is missed.

A Patient Partner at 6 Hours of Warrior Creek - Thank you Melissa for not making me do another lap.

Airborne Flight Crew – A great opportunity to ride a good bike, a free trip to Sea Otter and meeting new people.

Motivational Monday – It inspires me weekly when strangers will answer my questions about their cycling lives.

My Support Team at 24 Hours of Burn – Patient, funny, great cooks, horrible mechanics and amazing people.

Motivational Monday Kathy

What’s your name and location?

Kathy in Philadelphia, PA

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

road, mountain bike, would like to try cyclocross

What is your first cycling memory?

Riding around and around and around the driveway with my sister on our first big wheels (or so the photos recall, I must have been about 2 or 3). I do concretely remember my first 10 speed, it was grey and pink of course. There may have been tassles but I choose to block that part out, definitely had those fluorescent spoke blings that would make all kinds of noise when I rode.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My husband who’s gently but steadily encouraged me to ride with a healthy bit of tough love, but mostly me for riding through some challenging life events, and the mental release I feel when I’m riding. Also, watching bad ass cyclocross ladies compete, because they like hilly courses and dirt.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Riding my first 2 day total 160 or so mile ride after a summer of health issues that kept interrupting my training plans. It didn’t hurt that it was a ride for MS with total strangers cheering me on at the finish as if I wasn’t already getting a little emotional.

Cannondale Caad 4 S1000 with a sweet limited edition red, orange and black fade paint job (a tad too big for me but has served me quite well)

2011 Specialized Stumpjumper 29er (my new and first mtb bought as a bike shop demo sell off on which you will find me smiling and laughing on the Wissahickon trail loving this new ride) and also pennies being saved for a Specialized Ruby (or other ultimate road bike I will find to lust after)

Motivational Monday Tianna Meilinger

What’s your name and location?

Tianna Meilinger of Vaya Bags Ridgewood, NY

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

I like going to different bike trails such as Caumsett Park in Long Island. I also love running errands in NYC on my bike. Its really the best way to get around the city. I also commute to and from work at Vaya Bags, where I handmake bike messenger bags.

What is your first cycling memory?

I used to go camping in the Florida Keys with my parents every winter and my first memories of riding were there, on the Behia Honda campsite.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My good friend Rachel who is a bike messenger in New York City is very inspiring to me. When I get out on my bike in the rain, I think of Rachel hauling ass in the rain, snow, and sleet all winter long.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

My husband and I rented bikes while on vacation in Lake Tahoe. It was pretty awesome riding around, seeing the beautiful scenery and smelling the fresh mountain air.

I have a 1969 Vintage Holdsworth, that I found at a garage sale for six bucks and I love it!
I also have a Specialized Crossroads Hybrid which I use on trails.

I’ve known Sue and her husband for a few years now. It has been very exciting to see her grow and push her comfort zone in cycling. Now as an avid time trialist on a Cervelo S1 that I had the fortune of assisting her purchase and original fitting now two years ago. You’ll find Sue and her husband at the local time trial series at the local NASCAR speedway, traveling to regional rides as well and even competing in the National Senior Games cycling time trial!

What’s your name and location?

Sue at Charlotte, NC

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Road (and time trials)

What is your first cycling memory?

Riding my little red tricycle down the very small hill in the driveway and having to push it back up the hill so I could ride down again.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

No one in particular. Ride because I feel so much better on the bike (after I have warmed up) and after the ride–do it for the uplift.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

Riding the Blue Ridge looking at the foliage and not even worrying about the hills

Tell us all about your bikes

Only one bike I ride much at all, a Cervelo. Have a beater Trek that is saved for “just in case,” and an old hardtail mountain bike that very rarely gets out of the garage

What’s your name and location?

Colleen Schaible, Farmington NY

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

Road cycling

What is your first cycling memory?

My first pink Barbie bike and the day my dad took the training wheels off…I was wearing a pink windbreaker and it was fall and there were beautiful leaves on the gound! He took the training wheels off and away I went! I didn’t look back until I hit college and then upon turning 30 I was reaquainted with a bike and a new type of riding, now I will never look back!

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

My husband inspires me to ride and inspires me to be my best! He was the person to re-introduce me to the joy that is riding a bike and then showed me the courage to take my riding to the next level.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

I think my best moment was a local ride called the Tour de Thompson here in Brisotl, NY when I first met a group of local riders from a team I am now a member of…the ride was 63 miles and about 6000 feet of climbing over some tough grades! I put the boys in the hurt locker that day :) it was a great feeling that I try to tap in to time and time again on the road!

My favorite bike is my Specialized S Works Ruby road bike with amazing Zipp 303 wheels! It is black and white with a bit of red! My new toy is a Specialized Transition time trial bike that I hope to shred some time trial fields with next year. It is red and white with a bit of blk! I also have a Specialized Tri Cross that I bought to ride in the winter weather here in UNY. As you can see, I am a huge fan of Specialized!!!

Lori Cooke, Pembroke, MA

What type of cycling do you enjoy?

All of it!! Especially cyclocross

What is your first cycling memory?

Back in college; using my bike as transportation.

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

I inspire myself. Riding is my escape. I can go anywhere and always away from the stresses of daily life. It doesn’t ever matter what the weather is… My bike is my outlet to peace and happiness.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

It had to be day 2 of the downeast CX festival. Going in as the series leader, in the jersey. Needed to only beat the former world champ to keep my jersey. Front row start position, whistle blows, I get pushed into the fence. I’m tangled in my bike, on the ground as 50+ cyclists pedal over and around me. I’m stuck, no where to go except hope and pray I can actually get up when the herd passes. They are gone in what seemed like an eternity. I get up, take a deep breath, look at my bike which seems ok, mount and start to pedal. Damn, the chain is off and on the inside. Icant pedal it back on. Off the bike I manually replace it. “do you need medical?” asks the official. “No!” I start riding, tail between my kegs. God knows how big the gap is. “Ride the bike!” I tell myself. I hear cheers and the announcer detailing my trouble. The fire in my belly grows. One racer at a time.. I can do this. Start picking them off. I catch up to the pack. 40 minutes is plenty of time. There was more running in this bike race than riding it seemed. With each lap, I gained on the leaders, finishing 7th overall. Meant more to ne than that damn jersey which I sm now 8 points away from regaining. And I WILL!!

Playing “Cops and Robbers” on our banana seat bikes in Indianapolis. We lived on a long court with a hill and we’d ride up and down and chase each other down.

Jennifer Wheeler Motivational Monday

Who inspires you to ride, and better yet WHY?

Those who have accomplished greatness. It’s a reminder that you can accomplish the unthinkable with the right focus, talent, and determination.

What has been your best moment on the bike so far this year?

So many as it’s been an incredible first year for me. I would say winning my first NRC race for Team TIBCO during Speedweek. A close second would be placing 2nd to my teammate and world champion, Tara Whitten, at the Tour de Toona prologue. We talked for hours the night before about our goals and struggles in cycling, and it was the perfect cherry on top to place right next to each other.

I ride the Specialized S-Works Amira equipped with SRAM red components, Reynolds wheels, Control Tech handlebars and seat post, and Look Keo pedals. With all this bling, it seriously corners and descends like it’s on rails–the handicap in this situation is me! I can’t wait until my skills catch up with the bike’s capabilities :)

Tech Tuesday: How to Adjust a Threadless Headset

Tech Tuesday

Make sure to visit the sponsors of this posts.. Problem Solvers!

One concern that so many women (and guys) have with owning a bike is the basics of fixing it, or how to do basic road side repairs. I do recommend that as an avid cyclist even with some mechanical skills that you should become best buds with your local mechanic (beer or ice cream works well.) I also want women to feel empowered and to have a better idea of what they are talking about. Tech Tuesday is the remedy for common tech questions!

Today’s Tech Tuesday is based around adjusting your threadless headset. Threadless headsets are what 99% of new bikes come with these days, thanks to Cane Creek, and works with the bearings are pulled together by a nut placed inside of your fork steerer, then the stem is tightened down to hold everything in place.

Steps to Adjust your Threadless Headset

Step 1: Make sure that it is your headset that is loose. Often a loose headset is misdiagnosed by a loose quick release, brake caliper or front hub. We check the headset by grabbing the front brake only, rocking the bike front to back, if you feel movement you then turn the handlebars to the side and again rock the bike front to back.

Step 2: Once you are sure that it is your headset that is loose, or perhaps you have installed a new stem, loosen your stem steerer bolts so the stem can be moved side to side. You do not need to take the bolts out. Now tighten the top (stem) cap, you do not need to wrench down on it, but it should be snug. Rock the bike front to back to make sure the movement is gone.

Step 3: Tighten your stem down, making sure it is lined up with your wheel properly.

Step 4: Loosen the top cap a hair so not to cause the bearings to bind

Step 5: Move your handlebars side to side to make sure the headset is not too tight. If you feel binding repeat steps 2-4 but don’t tighten the top (stem) cap as much.

Step 6: Check over all the bolts and go enjoy and properly steering bike.

This Campaign has ended. No more pledges can be made.
