Sun Valley Media Camp in Sun Valley, ID: July 4-9
By invite-only, eight lucky female representatives will meet Rebecca, Katie Holden, Meredith Miller and Lea Davison for a personal tour of the world class riding in Sun Valley. The camp coincides with USAC XC National Championships in Sun Valley (July 5th-8th) to allow the attending media to cover the event and experience Idaho riding at its best.
Rebecca and her local female mountain bike posse will coach a 6-week teen riding camp for the second year. The classes will meet in June and July for weekly riding sessions on different trails in the Sun Valley area. The camp will focus on riding skills, trail etiquette and volunteer trail work.
The biggest freeride festival in the world, Crankworx is a magnet for the world’s best riders. With a collection of some of the best trails and parks on the planet, Rebecca and SRAM/ Specialized female pros will guest instruct and lead rides for all ability levels throughout the week.
Activities will include a pre-event social hour with complimentary bike fit and equipment check at NorCal Bike and ride tips from the pros. Rebecca and other female pros will offer a pre-ride preview of some of the toughest parts of the course. Post-event activities will include a SRAM/Specialized VIP reception for women and their guests with refreshments and GU recovery drinks.
Roc D’Azur Ladies Lounge and Dirty Girls Ride Clinics in France: October
This French mountain bike festival is open to riders of all levels and hosts races, fun rides, a huge bike expo and parties. Each day at the SRAM booth, female pros will be available to answer questions and lead mini-tech clinics. The pros will also be hosting short ride clinics and pump track sessions.

I can’t say enough great things abouthttp://rebeccarusch.com/. In years past I’ve had the honor to be in her pit as a mechanic, get a pat on the back at a race and more than that she’s always that constant voice in the back of my head on hard rides and long races.
Endurance mountain biking, but I also ride ‘cross, road, pump track, super D and townie/commuter.
3. What is your first cycling memory?
Ripping my purple banana seat Huffy down the brick street in front of my house. We lived on a quiet street on a hill and our house was near the top. Rolling down without pedaling was pure freedom, but I also kind of liked turning around and working hard to get back up so I could do it again. I guess that was my first type of “training” and the realization that it was rewarding to “earn your turns” so to speak.
4. Who in the current cycling industry inspires you, and better yet WHY?
Marla Streb. Hands down. She has handled a very long term racing and cycling career with such passion and grace and has done pretty much EVERYTHING. She started mountain biking at 28 after leaving her job in molecular biology AIDS research. Since then she paved the way for women in downhill by earning multiple national titles, world cup podiums and a SS world champ title. She’s also competitive in endurance races like La Ruta. She’s a Mom of 2, manages trail building projects in South America, she’s written two books, lived on a sailboat and manages the Luna women’s cycling team. She just announced her 2011 return to racing and will also be coaching ride clinics this year and just launched the opening of a bike cafe called Handle Bar in Baltimore. On top of all of that, she’s super friendly, funny and just the kind of person you want to hang out with. I just hope I don’t have to race against her this year!
5. What was your best moment on a bike in 2010?
Winning the 2010 Leadville Trail 100 and breaking the long standing women’s course record. The beauty of that day is that I worked hard all season for that one event and, like magic the training, dedication, equipment all aligned perfectly on that specific day. Peaking perfectly and having a race unfold as you visualize it is an elusive, slippery goal to grasp at. More times than not, things don’t go as planned. This time it did and I was elated with my performance and thankful to the team of people who helped me pull it off. It’s a day I won’t forget.
6. In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2011?
The #1 race goal is to try to defend my Leadville Trail 100 title for a 3rd time. It has never been done and my training plan is built 100% around this goal.
However, I also have some new projects that I’m super excited about. I have designed the SRAM Gold Rusch Tour for 2011 that will include various mtb events for women and girls. The events are all different, including a women’s only mountain bike race in Colorado (Bike Beti Bash), a high school girls race team in my home town (Wheel Girls), and the first event of the year, SRAM Ladies Lounge at Sea Otter! I will also hopefully be showing the 2010 Race Across the Sky Leadville 100 film in various locations as IMBA fundraisers. I love racing and have no intention of stopping anytime soon, but I also love to share my experience with other riders and help people find out how great riding a bike is! These extra projects are all just a natural progression in my own education and riding experience.
One of the things I am very excited about for the 2011 Sea Otter Classic is all the “ladies” focused events! On Sunday there is a full day of events scheduled to get women more active in the cycling lifestyle.

April 14-16th, 2011 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) from 2-4pm Meet and mingle with pro-women cyclist like Rebecca Rusch, Team TIBCO, and the list goes on. I met Katie last year at Sea Otter. A kick ass, down to earth, downhill chick. She talked about mountain technique, safety and was a smiling face that many women need to see when relating to “GNAR-CORE” riders. Super approachable and always wanting to help other women get stronger!
What’s your name and location?
My name is Katie Holden and I live in Scotts Valley, CA (near Santa Cruz)
What type of cycling do you enjoy?
I was born and bred on Downhill but I like just about everything. I spend the majority of my time trail riding on my Specialized Safire…it can take you a lot of places a downhill bike can’t (ie. up) and it shreds on the downhills. Love pump tracks. You can also find me out on the road bike now and again.
What is your first cycling memory?
My first bike memory is actually teaching my sister to ride a bike on our back patio in Ithaca, NY. I remember that experience quite vividly, it’s a little sad I cannot remember my own!
Who in the current cycling industry inspires you, and better yet WHY?
There has been an influx of quick girls the past few years which is quite inspiring. These girls are quick, driven, confident…it’s refreshing. When I first started racing, there would be 30+ girls at a national round and now you are lucky to get that at a World Cup round…it is so great that the numbers are going back up. When the depth of talent increases, everyone has to step it up a notch, that inspires me. You have train harder, go faster, push yourself out of your comfort zone…it’s a good thing! Progression is good. I think that now more than ever it is important for girls/women to work together and encourage each other. Often people don’t work together out of competitiveness (or fear) but what they are failing to realize is the quicker (and bigger) we go collectively, the more we will be taken seriously, the more we will get paid, the more we will be looked at as equals. That was kind of a roundabout way of answering the question but basically progression inspires me!
As far as actual people go, I have always been inspired by Jill Kintner for her drive and determination, Tracey Hannah for her pure talent on a bike (I have never seen raw talent like Tracey) and Rebecca Rusch because she is an incredible athlete and I have learned so much from her in one short year, I will always look up to those three but I am inspired by people on a daily basis!
In the next year, what are your goals with cycling and pushing yourself forward in 2012?
I want to be on the top of the podium…that is always the goal. Aside from that having fun and enjoying everything along the way is very important to me. i have never been the type to go to a race and hang out in the hotel room…I want to get out there, see cool stuff, eat good food, meet new people! Travel have been a huge partof my life since I was a kid, I absolutely love it…following that passion, I am working on doing some more bike/photo/guiding trips to mix it up!

Several months ago I had a plan going into the 2011 season. It included a duo race at the 6 Hours of Warrior Creek, a solo at the 6 Hour Grind on the Greenway, a ton of riding and then my first solo at Burn 24 Hour. As any good plan there was a few snags within this. My geared race bike, the Airborne Goblin, showed up a few weeks late which kept me on my fully rigid single speed for the 6 Hours of Warrior Creek, and kept me from racing the 6 Hour Grind. I quickly started commuting on the Goblin and riding it everywhere possible to get used to the fit and gearing.
I’ve never done a 24 hour mountain bike ride on my own, I’ve never come close to that. Even with tons of great inspiration and information from sources like Rebecca Rusch and Team Ergon I still didn’t know exactly what my body would think or my mind would do. Doing my best to prepare myself I lined myself up with some of the best support and gear a person could ask for. Amazing lights from Light & Motion (Seca 700 and Stella 300.) A great pit setup and location, and a great prepared pit crew.
Preparing for a 24 Hour Mountain Bike Race
Friday I pulled a half day of work, finished packing up the little Jetta and headed up to Wilkesboro from Mooresville NC. Quickly setting up my tent in fear of the rain storms headed towards the race course, I can say the purchase of the REI tent and garage was one of my smartest moves this year so far.

Somehow I set up the tent all by myself, losing about 2 lbs of water weight in the process. Looking over my shoulder the whole time at the large RV that was simply sitting there with generator and air conditioning running. Jealousy ran through my head for a moment.
After helping Jason B. with race sign up for 30 or so minutes, I ran out of things to do. I finally sat there in my chair, sucking down water and contemplating my next move. Would it be to nap, eat more beef jerky or go find friends. I sat, and thought about my life until friend, em:pwr teammate and pit neighbor, Stephanie Cole, showed up. We quickly pitched her ez-up, sleeping tent and staked them all to the ground so we could head off to dinner.
What did I eat for dinner the night before my solo race? Really good ribs of course.
Morning of my Race
Sleeping in the tent the night before my race was fine. The weather was perfect and I was sprawled out across two sleeping bags and my Thermarest! The week leading into my race I did my best to be over hydrated. Counting bottles of water as I drank them at work, and having a water bottle near by at all times. I think this was a smart choice but at 11pm, 2am and 4am my bladder thought other wise. The idea of walking around in the dark to the line of port-a-jons, through a large mud puddle and having to wake up enough to do all these things…well it didn’t fly for me. Fortunately for me, I have been taught by my better half to pee in bottles. If you look at the tent photo above we had added a “garage” to the tent. Both sides zip down to provide shelter for the bikes, dogs or whatnot and additional room at night. It also provided a perfect place to “pee in my bottles” in the middle of the night. Between all my wake up calls, I think I filled two bottles and was thankful when 7am came to use a real toilet.
I did my best to setup all my gear, label my batteries, swap my tires from Small Block Eight to the most “mud tire” I owned which is the Bontrager XDX. Checked over my bike and laid out all my gear for the first couple laps. At around 10:30 my pit crew showed up, set up more stuff and prepared themselves for the next 28 hours of their lives.

Somehow I had recruited a few friends to come take care of me, entertain each other and really “hang out” for over 24 hours of their Memorial Day weekend.

The race, broken down into bite size pieces will be up for tomorrow. I’m still trying to process everything that happened in that short time span of 24 hours. What I did wrong, right and what I need to do better in life to get me further in racing.
The main purpose of my recent trip to the 2011 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, CA was a homecoming of sorts for the 2011 Airborne Flight Crew members. It is the one time a year that we are brought together from across the country. Some of us race, some of us banter and we all work the Airborne Bicycles booth for a couple hours a day during the festival.

Round Up of Events
Day 1 (Wednesday) :
Some members were flown in a couple days early to get become Airborne models for the website and print use. From my understanding the photos were taken by Ian Hyland of PinkBike fame. There was a ton of hiking, re-doing shots and back and forth shuttling. (This is also the day I was flying all over the country getting to Monterey.)
Day 2 (Thursday) :
Every day started off with unpacking the trailer we had packed with bikes the night before. This is the official first day of the Sea Otter Classic. We were all given our Airborne Flight Crew gear. Dickies work shirts, hoodie, beanie, long sleeve jersey, a couple XC jerseys, shorts, and a downhill jersey.
It is “industry day” so it is the day most vendors are getting their booth’s properly setup, running through demo bikes again and it is also a good time to split up booth duties to walk the festival. Airborne Flight Crew members test rode all the models, for most of us it was the first time to test ride the new Goblin 29er, Wingman DJ and Delta CX. From 2-4pm I was found over at the Ladies Lounge. Then it was time to start shutting down and putting all the bikes and goodies back in the trailer.
Thursday night we went out as a group for authentic mexican food and really started to get to know each other. Several folks stayed out in the hotel room, I went back to my room to recover from the past 48 hours of travel and going.
Day 3 (Friday) :
Woke early to go over the Delta CX I had brought back from the festival to ride in. Grabbed breakfast with a few Flight Crew members and started riding. 9 miles = 1.5 hours = a crap load of climbing! It was a beautiful ride, but very humbling thanks to the long sustained climbs on the cyclocross knobby tires. I look forward to having a geared cyclocross or 29er bike to take it to Pisgah for the fire road climbs that I miss being able to ride. My legs were miserable the rest of the day, but it was a good feeling even though I regretted it during the long walk back to the car at 6pm.
The day consumers really start mingling. It was a really good fit with most Flight Crew Members. It is a very even split between the gravity style riders and XC. I think I’m one of the most “dedicated” cyclocross racers, so I tried to pinch hit as much as possible on that one. It was also very helpful to have so many knowledge folks of the Taka and Wingman bikes. A good amount of bikes were test rode and talked about. Several magazines and websites came to take photos or chat about the bikes. This included someone from 650b.com to check out Tony’s custom Zeppelin that he converted to 650b.
I can’t forget the Ladies Lounge with Rebecca Rosch and other pro-super star ladies. There were tons of tech questions, I ended up greasy after it (always a great sign.) One of the readers of our site (link/name?) who’s a pilot for a heli-ambulance landed her helicopter to come to the show and join Ladies Lounge! That was such a great treat to meet someone with an amazing story and a friend of Bike Shop Girl.
Tuesday through Thursday was the BLC (link) which many vendors and “who’s who” in the industy were at. Friday those folks finally made it to the Sea Otter Festival, including my dear Pam Sayler from Kurt Kinetic (link.) After the festival ended for the day I spent a couple hours catching up with her and then we all went to sushi down at the Wharf. If I have a chance to make it back to Sea Otter next year, I will go a day early to fully experience Monterey. The wharf alone was amazing with the seals on the coast, the boats in the harbor and the mountains in the background!
Day 4 (Saturday) :
The busiest day of the festival, my last day of the festival and the day I became inspired to get to more races to photograph. All our downhillers were racing and running around frantic in the morning, parking was crazy and included another long walk up hills but it was a great day. I walked every inch of the show it seemed!

Tony learned that 650b.com was the brainchild of the one and only, Bike Shop Girl. There wasn’t any “scoping” of his bike and Airborne Bicycles wasn’t going to change their mind this season on NOT having a 650b Zeppelin.
Unfortunately I wimped out and didn’t go out after we closed down shop. With a long day of traveling the next day, I stayed behind at the hotel to eat in and pack. From what I hear our team husband, Jim Davis, stayed behind at the festival and has some wild stories to tell. (Including hitch hiking home!) Wendy and I talked racing a bit before bed, and I had to say my final goodbye to many of my teammates until the next time I see them (probably 360 days!)
Other Notes :
While I wasn’t present for the last day of the festival, there was still tons going on. Wendy placed 10th in her race! First race on the Goblin and gears (from my understanding), she rocked it! Other Flight Crew members also had snafu’s with their flights and spent way too much time with airlines..
Hopefully all my teammates can understand this when I say it… When I learned the roster for the 2011 Airborne Flight Crew the one thing that I was jumping up and down inside about was the name Jerry Hazard. Jerry is an amazing photographer that I followed almost 10 years ago on Deviantart.com. His photo’s have been featured in many magazines and his personality around photography and riding is a treat to be around. To be able to pull from that type of fountain was alone something to fly to California for! During my trip he allowed me to borrow his fish eye lense, evidence is above and on many photo’s through out the Sea Otter post you’ll see. Walking me patiently through the settings and recommendations. It was humbling and inspirational to see his photography coming from the event!
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday – Shop visits with Lazer Sport extraodinare Rebecca Karbon all over the Atlanta Georgia area.
To make this next week even more epic there is road trips in the Jetta, and of course mountain biking will be required to keep me sane.
Let me give you a glimpse in to my day
10am leave my humble abode. Kiss my significant other good bye for a week, drive 3.5 hours to middle of no-where Georgia to drop off helmet samples.
1:38pm after successfully dropping off helmets in the middle of a gas station parking lot, pull out the laptop, charge on the Sprint mobile hotspot device and quickly find a mountain bike trail 20 mins away, the proper direction to where I am headed for the night!
2:15pm kitted up in spandex I hit the trail. Quickly winded since I haven’t been on the bike too often recently. I am left smiling and thanking people kindly as they pass me. Twice I passed some lads. It felt good, and then I wanted to hurl due to the effort of “chicking them”.
5:15pm Strap my bike to my roof, and add my soaking wet shoes in hopes they will air out. That’s what you get for skipping around a creek in hopes to get a good photo!
5:45pm I am holed up in a Starbucks in Dahlonega GA. Free internet and good green tea!
