Staying Motivated During the Polar Vortex and Colorado Winters

Colorado Winter Cycling
5 Flares 5 Flares ×

I need to confess, I haven’t been riding my bike as you can probably tell from the lack of updates and Strava achievements. In the cold and dark I’ve been turning to running and exploring the trails near my home. While this isn’t ideal for a content on a cycling specific site it is ideal for my happiness. My 2014 goals include no bike races for the first time in many years but instead to explore more and become a more rounded athlete.

How are you staying motivated and moving during these cold spells that keep hitting? Are you hitting the gym or maybe braver than I and suiting up for a bike ride? Perhaps you are smart and on the trainer in your basement pushing those watts around as your sweat hits the ground.

Tell us, what are you doing?

    Hey Arleigh,

I’ve been doing quite a bit of skiing and have been enjoying the cold weather. Snow conditions have been kind of blah, but looks like we have some snow in the forecast again for the next few days!

Also, I’ve tried to stay on the bike a good bit–got out twice on the mountain bike last week, and once already this week. Still, it’s pretty chilly out there, so I just ordered my first trainer the other day. It’s supposed to get here on Friday… not sure if it will be miserable or tolerable. We shall see!

Hope you continue to have fun on your runs!

It has been VERY cold this January! I don’t blame anyone for not being out on a bicycle at all. I have been on the bike a bit (but certainly not in the last several days). I have also taken to walking and running, especially with the roads being very slick in spots at the moment. I do still intend to bike (even if it’s cold), but it will mostly be for transportation and/or pleasure purposes, as the thought of training rides at the moment seem unfathomable. Hang in… we’ll get through this cold snap. :O)
