88bikes Foundation – a foundation that globally endows bicycles to girls, especially the heroic survivors of human trafficking – will unveil its new mobile photo gallery at this year’s MountainFilm, which takes place in Telluride, Colorado throughout Memorial Day weekend. The trailer-based gallery will be part of the film festival’s opening party, the MountainFilm Gallery Walk, in downtown Telluride on Friday, May 24.

The Moment of Happy, is named after the highlight of each endowment, when the girls receive their bikes. 88bikes asks each girl what she wants to be when she grows up and then takes a picture of her holding her donor’s picture. This exhibit features 900 of those photos, with courageous girls from 16 countries, including Nepal, India, Ghana, Mozambique, Serbia, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Vietnam, Bolivia, the Navajo Nation, the Philippines and Uganda.

“The kids pictured in these photos are the heart and soul of 88bikes, and are our daily inspiration,” said Dan Austin, co-founder of 88bikes. “We wanted to share images of these heroic kids so that people at MountainFilm and beyond can see for themselves the results of our joy–based philanthropy. Many of these girls have survived tremendous challenges in their short lives, from human trafficking to war and poverty, and these bikes give them hope, independence and just plain happiness. That’s what these images capture, pure and simple.”

88 Bike Shop

The art gallery was designed and built in 2011 by 88bikes partner DesignBuildBLUFF as a mobile, sustainable solar-powered bike shop for a 88bikes project on the Navajo Nation. It was being constructed entirely from locally foraged materials, including the hoods of junked cars on the reservation. After fulfilling its calling for that project, the bike shop decided to put its liberal arts degree to good use and become the gallery space for The Moment of Happy installation.

Dan Austin, Jared Austin and 88bikes volunteers shot the photos at the 88bikes endowment locations. Austin collaborated with Kim Ngo, Hank Louis, Nick Arauz, Jared Austin, Pauline Nee, Cindy Bithell and Andrea Powell to curate The Moment of Happy.
About 88Bikes
The 88bikes Foundation endows bicycles to girls throughout the world, especially the heroic survivors of human trafficking. The highlight of each endowment is the Moment of Happy, when every girl at the ashram or shelter receives her new bike. We partner with vetted, locally-run NGOs, purchase bicycles from local vendors, hire local labor and connect each survivor one-to-one with her donor. Our volunteers return to lead bike rides, organize repair clinics, even paint murals! It’s all part of what we call Joy–Based Philanthropy–elevating happiness to a human need. Since 2007 we’ve endowed nearly 3000 bikes to heroic kids in fourteen countries–and we’re just getting warmed up. To learn more and become a bike sponsor, go to www.88bikes.org.
