Bike Commuting with Children

Bike Commuting with Children

Over at CommuteByBike.com I posted an article this morning about the various ways to carry your smaller child on a bike.   It is a good article to read for the basics of child bike seats, trailers and the Xtracycle.  Many commentors have added their own ways of carrying children which I hope to touch on soon.

How do you ride with your smaller children? Do you commute with them to places like school or the library, by bike?

I want to start commuting on bike with my 4 1/2 year old, and don’t know what mode to purchase. She is quite keen on riding in a trailer, but how long will that be appropriate for? What do you suggest I get?

I can’t say enough good things about Trail-Gators. I am not sure why I don’t see more of them around. Every family who has seen us riding with this has thought it was a great idea. Some of our friends have gotten one too and similarly love it.

It gives you all the benefits of a tral-a-bike but lets your kid ride part of the way or ride around when you get to your destination even if they are still using training wheels.

We started using ours in 2005 when my oldest was 2 1/2 and are still using it now with my youngest who is 5.

We even bring it on vacation with us along with an extra set of brackets to attach to the bikes when we get there. It collapses enough to easily fit in a large suitcase.
